Ho Chi Minh City: Of the 54 students at Nguyen Hien Primary School in Thu Duc City who were absent from school, 22 had stomach aches, diarrhea and mild fever. The health sector determined that it was not food poisoning and is investigating the cause.
On the afternoon of January 17, a representative of the Ho Chi Minh City Center for Disease Control said that this morning, they had coordinated with the Thu Duc City Medical Center to conduct an epidemiological investigation. The results showed that out of the 54 students who were absent from school on January 16, 22 reported symptoms such as abdominal pain (the majority), diarrhea, and mild fever. These symptoms appeared the afternoon of the previous day (January 15) after the students returned home from school.
Of these, 4 students were taken to the doctor by their families and were diagnosed with gastroenteritis. The remaining 18 children were cared for at home, with no critical cases.
This morning, 10/22 students are in stable health and have returned to school as usual. 12 students were absent, including 2 with mild stomachaches and 10 with no symptoms but still tired. These students live scattered throughout An Phu ward and have not been recorded to have shared activities outside of the school.
Nguyen Hien Primary School has 1,557 students in 35 classes, with an average of 60-70 students absent each day for various reasons.
The health sector is continuing to investigate the cause of the incident and guide schools in implementing disease prevention and hygiene in schools.
