South Korea, the United States and Japan conducted a joint naval exercise in waters south of the Korean Peninsula on January 17 to enhance the three countries' response capabilities to threats to maritime security, the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) of South Korea said.
This is the first trilateral exercise held after the US, Japan and South Korea deployed a system to share real-time North Korean missile warning data and agreed to jointly develop a multi-year exercise plan to enhance response capabilities.
According to Yonhap, the exercise took place from January 15 to 17 in the southeastern waters off Jeju Island with the participation of nine warships from three countries, including the US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson, destroyers equipped with the Aegis combat system of the South Korean Navy, and Kongo-class destroyers of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force.
