The pair of statues were discovered in 1992 in the Ba Canh area, Dap Da ward, An Nhon town, in a burial pit with the Gajashimha statue with an elephant head and lion body.
According to researchers, the stone lion statue of Do Ban citadel dates from the late 11th century to the early 12th century, bearing the characteristics of Tra Kieu style combined with the original lines of Binh Dinh style (Mam tower style).
The two stone lion statues of Do Ban citadel are Champa sculptures 1.05 m high, 1.2 m long, 0.6 m widest at the back; depicting the male species in a round statue form, made of sandstone.
The decorative details and posture of the two statues are carved the same, with the front legs raised, the head raised high, the buttocks pushed slightly from behind, the chest stretched straight forward, and the back belly lying on the ground.
Because the two front legs are carved short and unbalanced, the two sides look like two lions lying down. This is also a unique feature, completely different from the Champa lion statues known up to now.
The recognition of the two stone lion statues of Do Ban citadel as national treasures is an opportunity for the province to introduce and honor tangible cultural heritages with lasting values and strong vitality.
At the same time, acknowledge, commend and appreciate the efforts of organizations and individuals in preserving, conserving and promoting historical and cultural values in Binh Dinh, promoting the responsibility of preserving and promoting heritage to serve socio-economic development in the following years.
To date, Binh Dinh has 150 historical-cultural relics and scenic spots ranked, including 2 special national relics, 34 national relics and 114 provincial relics, along with thousands of antiques being preserved by the Provincial Museum, Quang Trung Museum and organizations and individuals.
