Hai Phong misses out on victory due to penalty in V-League

VnExpressVnExpress27/02/2024

Nguyen Huu Son's handball in the penalty area led to a penalty at the end of the match, causing Hai Phong to be held to a 2-2 draw by SLNA in round 11 of the 2023-2024 V-League.

In the 88th minute, Tran Manh Quynh crossed the ball from the left wing and it hit Nguyen Huu Son's forearm. Referee Hoang Ngoc Ha immediately pointed to the penalty spot and Michael Olaha did not miss the opportunity, placing the ball into the left corner, fooling goalkeeper Dinh Trieu, thereby bringing a point for the away team.

At Lach Tray Stadium on the evening of February 27, SLNA unexpectedly scored a goal in the sixth minute. From a very narrow angle near the sideline, Dinh Xuan Tien shot straight, sending the ball arcing past Dinh Trieu, then hitting the inside edge of the far post to open the score. The goal was of great significance to the midfielder born in 2003 after a long period of being banned from playing by SLNA for violating discipline, before making his first starting appearance against Hai Phong.

The home team played better in the following minutes before equalizing in the 23rd minute. From a corner kick on the left wing, the ball was hung to the near post for Tuan Anh to head back to the far post, through which Joseph Mpande rushed in to head into the empty net.

In the second half, both teams controlled the ball well but did not create many scoring opportunities. In the 59th minute, Luong Hoang Nam controlled the ball incorrectly but it gave Trieu Viet Hung a chance to cross from the left wing. In the penalty area, Lucao Vinicius also controlled the ball incorrectly but it became an assist for Joseph Mpande to shoot low and beat Van Viet for the second time.

Hai Phong played solidly in the remaining minutes and did not give SLNA any chances. However, Huu Son's mistake caused the port city team to miss out on victory.

Before that, Hai Phong suffered four consecutive losses, respectively against Quang Nam 0-2, Binh Dinh 0-1, Nam Dinh 1-3 and Thanh Hoa 2-3. Of these, the team had three consecutive matches without a win at home at Lach Tray, the worst performance since coach Chu Dinh Nghiem took charge in 2022.

On the V-League table, Hai Phong is ninth with 12 points, while SLNA is one point ahead in seventh. In the next round, Hai Phong will host The Cong – a team that has also not won in six consecutive matches, while SLNA will return to Vinh Stadium to face Nam Dinh.
