With 6 machines supporting the production and trading of local agricultural products, male students Nguyen Huu Huu and Nguyen Tien Duy, Phu Yen Vocational College (Tuy Hoa City), help people improve their economic life.
Invention from reality
Growing up in Tuy An District and Dong Hoa Town (Phu Yen) with large lotus fields, both Huu and Duy realized the hardships of farmers when relying on this crop for economic development. Because almost all stages are done completely by hand.

"My hometown is a lotus village, when the season comes, every family makes a living by harvesting this plant. Among them, lotus heart is the most popular product but it is very difficult to get and requires many manual steps, making it in 1 hour only yields half a kilo," said Tien Duy.
Wanting to make the job easier, in 2014, Duy and Huu thought of a way to create an automatic machine to peel lotus seeds and increase harvesting speed.
"Both of us majored in mechanics, so after learning any related principles, we applied them to making machines. Because we didn't have much time, we often stayed at the school's manufacturing workshop at night to research. The initial budget was quite limited, only about 5 million VND, and the teachers supported the iron and steel, and we had to research how to make the machine easy to use and close to the people," Huu said.

Talking about the memorable time he made the machine, Huu shared: "To test the machine's efficiency, we often bought a lot of lotus to test. But that time, because it was too late in the season, no one was selling, so we had to go to many lotus fields to test the machine."
When the machine was completed, Huu and Duy brought it to people to try. At first, because they did not trust the two inexperienced "engineers", everyone was hesitant and refused. Only when Huu and Duy demonstrated the machine's effectiveness and gave them detailed instructions did they buy it for use.
As the person who bought 2 automatic lotus peeling machines from Huu and Duy, Mr. Le Thanh Tao, a farmer in Tan Hoa village, Dong Xuan district (Phu Yen), said: "During harvest season, I often peel the silk shell and poke the lotus heart for a long time but the productivity is not much. When using the machine, the work is faster, 3 times faster than before, and the design is compact, the price is cheap, so I plan to buy more for the next harvests."
Machines worth tens of millions of dong
In addition to the lotus peeling machine, these two male students also manufacture and research many other types of machines, such as: semi-automatic coffee roasting, aloe vera peeling and dicing, automatic screw thread drilling, ocean trash collection, etc.; and are ordered by a local business every month with prices ranging from 10 - 25 million VND/machine.
"Each machine is compact in size, with an area of less than 1 square meter , but is nearly 90% efficient. For example, the aloe vera peeling and dicing machine can produce 100 kg of finished products in 1 hour, more than ten times more than doing it by hand. Currently, both are researching a lotus powder making machine to help people with more processing instead of just selling raw products," Huu said.

As the person who guided and accompanied these two male students, Mr. Nguyen Tan Tung, a mechanical engineer and lecturer at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at Phu Yen Vocational College, shared: "Because of their family circumstances, Huu and Duy could only learn a trade, but both of them are very passionate and work hard to invent many types of machines to support people. Many times, after finishing school, the two of them stay at school to read documents and then work hard, so they do not pay attention to themselves, so I have great faith in their future success."
Sharing his research secrets, Duy said that whether he is going out, studying or working, he always carries a small notebook with him, and whenever he sees a new problem or good idea, he writes it down to implement. "You have to study well and be passionate about this to be able to pursue it long term. When reading documents, I often think broadly so as not to be limited in my ideas and especially do it because I want to change or bring some benefit to society," said this male student.
