Eight years ago, shooter Hoang Xuan Vinh brought Olympic gold to Vietnamese sports for the first time with a record-breaking 10m air pistol event for men at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
8 years later, Trinh Thu Vinh came to the Olympics and also excelled, reaching the finals twice.

From the highlands of Thanh Hoa to the Paris Olympics
Trinh Thu Vinh was born into a family with both parents working as farmers in the northwestern mountainous region of Thach Thanh District (Thanh Hoa Province). Thu Vinh's parents have 3 daughters, Thu Vinh (born in 2000) is the second child. Before her, there was a disabled older sister (born in 1997) and after her was a younger sister (born in 2008). When Thu Vinh was young, her parents made a living by growing sugarcane for hire.

Because of her family's economic difficulties, since childhood Thu Vinh had to go to school and help her parents with farming and herding buffalo.
Gradually, when life became less difficult, Thu Vinh's family was able to build a relatively solid house and have an orchard that provided a relatively stable income. In that house, the certificates of merit and the collection of medals of the second daughter Thu Vinh were placed in the most solemn and visible places; they were the proudest "assets" that Thu Vinh's parents often showed off to the neighbors.

The days when Thu Vinh competed in the Paris Olympics were also the time when custard apples were harvested. Taking advantage of their free time, Thu Vinh’s parents kept reading newspapers to hear about their daughter’s competition results. During these days, relatives and neighbors often came to the house to ask about and congratulate the family on having a talented daughter.

Mr. Trinh Van Ba - Thu Vinh's father, recalled that when she was a child, Thu Vinh was a small girl. Therefore, the family never thought that one day this skinny daughter would become a national player and even less dreamed that one day their child would have the opportunity to compete in the most prestigious arena in the world.
Little Thu Vinh had a natural affinity for sports. Like all other rural children at that time, Thu Vinh loved running and jumping with her friends. The physical education teacher saw that none of her peers could keep up with Thu Vinh on the school playground, so he encouraged her to participate in local athletics competitions.
These days, Thu Vinh's parents still go to the garden to pick custard apples to sell.
Ms. Le Thi Cuong, Thu Vinh's mother, recounted that in 8th grade, she hid from her parents to compete in athletics, and only told her parents when she was able to represent the district in the provincial competition. From then on, she joined the People's Police athletics team and began her professional sports career. However, Thu Vinh's relationship with athletics did not last long. After a few years of training and competing without many notable achievements, Thu Vinh switched to shooting. Immediately, she demonstrated her outstanding talent in this sport that requires high concentration and precision with 2 individual and team gold medals; at the same time, she set a national youth record at the 2018 National Youth Air Pistol Championship.
Four years later, Thu Vinh continued to win gold at the 9th National Sports Festival. Also in 2022, at the 31st SEA Games in Hanoi, she won 1 silver and 1 bronze medal at the age of 22.

It was not until August 2023 that Thu Vinh's name really emerged when she won a ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympics with 5th place in the qualifying round of the women's 10m air pistol event at the World Shooting Championship. This was also the second ticket for the Vietnamese sports delegation, after cyclist Nguyen Thi That in cycling.
It has been 8 years since the Rio Olympic gold medal of shooter Hoang Xuan Vinh, the country's sports fans are full of hope for an Olympic medal and almost all expectations are placed on the shoulders of the young girl Trinh Thu Vinh. In just 5 days, she consecutively entered the finals of 2 events: women's 10m air pistol and 25m sport pistol. In the event considered her forte, Thu Vinh sadly finished 4th despite a relatively good result. On the afternoon of August 3, in the women's 25m sport pistol event, she tried very hard. People used to feel sorry for shooter Hoang Xuan Vinh - the first person to bring home an Olympic gold medal for Vietnamese sports when after that year's Olympics in Brazil, his achievements in regional competitions were not really good and then he retired to work as a coach and youth trainer. And it should also be mentioned that when he won the Olympic gold medal, Hoang Xuan Vinh was over 40 years old.
As for Thu Vinh, she is still very young, not yet at the ripe age for a shooting athlete. The courage she demonstrated at this Olympics gives domestic sports fans hope that her future with shooting will be even brighter.
