Attending the event were representatives from the US Embassy in Vietnam, the Vietnam National Mine Action Center (VNMAC), the Provincial People's Committee, relevant departments, agencies, units and localities.
According to information from the workshop, despite many efforts over many decades, bomb and mine contamination still affects more than 18% of the country's land area. Quang Binh is one of the most heavily affected localities with a total area contaminated with bombs and mines of 28%; 100% of communes are contaminated with bombs and mines.
The RAPPORT project is funded by the US Department of State, implemented by CRS in collaboration with the Department of Health in Hue City and Quang Binh Province.
Lasting for four years (2024-2028), the project is expected to support nearly 200,000 people and families in areas contaminated with mines and explosives; helping them to be able to protect themselves from related accidents.
The project will apply social behaviour change methods, promoting safe and practical actions that can prevent accidents such as identifying, avoiding and reporting mines and UXO, and supporting local authorities in working with survey and clearance units. This approach will be implemented through specialized training sessions, media campaigns and community activities.
The Department of Health will work with CRS to develop and implement training tools and materials tailored to the needs of local people. Core groups (including local leaders, volunteers and government officials) will play a central role in transmitting knowledge about mine and UXO prevention to high-risk groups.
The project will also support VNMAC in finalizing the national strategy on mine and UXO risk education and enhancing coordination among mine action organizations across the country.
