Twice the mother's belly was cut open to welcome the baby boy into the world

Ho Chi Minh City Due to placenta accreta, a 33-year-old woman had to undergo two cesarean sections at two hospitals to give birth to a 3.2 kg baby boy.

On June 6, a representative of Tu Du Hospital said that they had just coordinated with Binh Duong General Hospital to perform a surgery to save the lives of a mother and child who was pregnant for the fourth time.

Previously, the pregnant woman had a prenatal check-up at a medical facility near her home but no abnormalities were noted. On the morning of June 2, the woman felt a slight abdominal distention and discomfort, so she went to the Binh Duong General Hospital for a check-up and was admitted to the hospital at 39 weeks and 2 days pregnant, on the same old cesarean section wound twice.

The pregnant woman had an ultrasound, blood tests, pre-surgery and cesarean section that same afternoon. However, when opening the abdomen, the doctor saw that the front of the uterus to the bladder had a lot of blood vessels, suspecting a condition called placenta accreta.

Placenta accreta is a dangerous condition in which part or all of the placenta invades and cannot be separated from the uterine wall. This can lead to postpartum hemorrhage, blood clotting disorders, infection, perforation or uterine rupture, which can be life-threatening for the mother.

Immediately, doctors in Binh Duong consulted with the Tu Du Hospital team and decided to close the mother's abdomen and safely transfer both mother and child to Tu Du at 6:55 p.m.

Here, doctors examined and determined that the mother's health was good, blood pressure was stable, and the fetal heart rate was within normal limits. Doctors prepared to transfuse blood before and during the surgery due to the risk of heavy blood loss.

The second surgery was performed at 8 p.m. the same day, the doctor performed a cesarean section and completely removed the uterus. During the nearly 7-hour surgery, the mother lost 1,400 ml of blood and was transfused with 2 units of packed red blood cells, 350 ml.

After 3 days of surgery, the mother is now healthy, no fever, dry surgical wound, and eating normally.

Doctors recommend that women who have had multiple pregnancies, have a history of cesarean section, and are at high risk of pregnancy should pay attention to getting a full examination at a highly specialized medical facility. From there, any accompanying abnormalities can be detected to prepare appropriate and safe treatment methods for the mother and fetus.
