Perspective of Lien Chieu port - a key project of Da Nang under construction |
Resilience from infrastructure
These days, the construction site of Lien Chieu Port - a key project of Da Nang City, is busier than ever. Engineers and workers are working in 3 shifts continuously, with the determination to complete the project by November 2025. According to the Management Board of Priority Infrastructure Investment Projects of Da Nang City, the Lien Chieu Port Project - the shared infrastructure part, has reached more than 55% progress.
Da Nang's urgency in building Lien Chieu port is necessary, as it is predicted that this will be a project that will create growth momentum for the City in the future.
Over the past years, Da Nang has invested large resources to develop synchronous economic and social infrastructure, thanks to which the city has had a period of rapid development. With transport infrastructure, Da Nang possesses all four types of railways, roads, airways, and waterways, creating advantages for Da Nang to become a center of trade, tourism, and logistics in the Central Highlands and the whole country.
Da Nang will build 2 MRT lines, 11 LRT lines, 3 tourist LRT lines or other methods with equivalent capacity and speed. Build public transport routes (urban railway or other equivalent methods) connecting Da Nang with Hoi An City (Quang Nam Province) and Lang Co Town (Thua Thien - Hue Province).
For roads, the Da Nang – Thanh My – Ngoc Hoi – Bo Y expressway will be built connecting with the Da Nang – Quang Ngai expressway; La Son – Tuy Loan expressway will be upgraded; National Highway 14B, National Highway 14G section through Da Nang will be upgraded...
Da Nang has a convenient deep-water seaport system, namely Tien Sa port, Tho Quang port and is continuing to invest in building Lien Chieu port. This advantage makes Da Nang a major maritime transport center of Vietnam; an important logistics hub, a strategic link on the East-West Economic Corridor. Da Nang International Airport is also the third largest airport in the country, receiving hundreds of flights from all over the world every day. In parallel, many key roads such as Quang Ngai - Da Nang, Da Nang - La Son expressways; National Highways 1A, 14B, 14G passing through Da Nang have been invested and upgraded, conveniently connecting Da Nang with the region.
In addition to synchronizing transport infrastructure and seaports, Da Nang City also focuses on investing in industrial infrastructure. In addition to 6 existing industrial parks and 1 high-tech park, Da Nang is investing in 3 new industrial parks with a total area of over 800 hectares, including Hoa Nhon, Hoa Ninh, Hoa Cam - Phase II. The estimated investment capital for the 3 new industrial parks is over 13,000 billion VND.
Investing in infrastructure completion is vital, so the City is making every effort to build large projects and works. In addition to the Lien Chieu Port Project, Da Nang is also implementing a specialized coastal road project connecting Lien Chieu Port with the High-Tech Park with 6 lanes, with a total investment of 1,200 billion VND. In addition, the Hoa Lien - Tuy Loan expressway connecting the expressway through 5 central provinces, with a total investment of more than 2,112 billion VND; the National Highway 14B Improvement and Upgrade Project, with a total investment of more than 788 billion VND... are also being invested in.
According to Dr. Nguyen Dinh Cung, former Director of the Central Institute for Economic Management, the completion of transport infrastructure is of great significance, creating momentum for Da Nang. Therefore, to continue to grow in the new stage, the City must quickly expand its development space.
“Da Nang City needs to soon upgrade the airport with a capacity of 25 million passengers/year as planned, to have more flights connecting with countries around the world. In addition, it is necessary to invest in completing Lien Chieu port, upgrading Tien Sa port, upgrading national highways, and allocating sufficient capital to implement National Highway 14B and 14G projects connecting Da Nang with the Northern Central Highlands, Laos, Myanmar, etc. Establish a Central Central and Central Highlands Development Cooperation Council, with the main function of identifying and coordinating the implementation of priority investment and development projects in the region,” Mr. Cung proposed.
Welcoming strategic investors
Recently, the CEO of Adani Ports and Special Economic Zones Company (India), Mr. Karan Adani shared that the Company has received preliminary approval from the Vietnamese Government to develop a new seaport in Da Nang City. Accordingly, the project will have a container terminal and a multi-purpose terminal to handle various types of goods. According to Mr. Karan, the port planned to be built in Da Nang will be the 4th international port of Adani Group. The project is in the initial planning stage, the total investment has not been decided.
Adani Group, owned by Indian billionaire Gautam Adani, the second richest man in Asia, chose to invest in a seaport in Da Nang, showing the attractiveness of this locality, especially with the Lien Chieu deep-water seaport project.
According to the plan submitted by Da Nang City to the Government for approval, the total initial investment capital for Lien Chieu Port (investment calling part) is about 48,304 billion VND, including investment in 8 container terminals (total anchorage length of 2,750 m for ships from 50,000 to 200,000 DWT), 6 general cargo terminals (total anchorage length of 1,550 m for ships from 50,000 to 100,000 DWT), wharfs for river-sea ships, port rear, total area of 450 hectares, the volume of goods passing through the port reaches 50 million tons/year. Currently, in addition to Adani Group, a number of other large investors are also interested in Lien Chieu Port Project such as the BRG - Sumitomo joint venture...
In addition, investment capital from enterprises has also been poured into Da Nang, especially in the high-tech industry sector. According to the Management Board of Da Nang High-Tech Park and Industrial Zones, to date, the city has attracted 523 investment projects in industrial zones; including 399 domestic investment projects with a total investment capital of over VND34,458 billion; 124 FDI projects with a total investment capital of over USD2 billion.
Of which, Da Nang High-Tech Park attracted 30 investment projects with a total capital of nearly 1.1 billion USD. In early 2024, Foxlink Group increased the total investment of the electronic components factory project in the High-Tech Park to 400 million USD. Foxlink Group also introduced a number of Taiwanese and Japanese semiconductor enterprises to invest in the High-Tech Park. These investors will need an additional 50 hectares of the High-Tech Park. As production projects increase, the synchronous expressway system connecting through major economic zones in the region will create a source of goods to serve Lien Chieu port.
The free trade zone associated with Lien Chieu port; industrial parks and expressways under construction will open up many prospects to attract strategic investors to Da Nang.
The National Assembly has passed Resolution 136/2024/QH15 on the organization of urban government and piloting a number of specific mechanisms and policies for the development of Da Nang City, opening up great opportunities to attract strategic investors. In particular, priority industries to attract strategic investors with capital of VND 6,000 billion or more include semiconductor chip and microchip technology; investment in construction and business of Free Trade Zones; investment in construction and business of production - logistics zones associated with Lien Chieu seaport.
In particular, Da Nang attracts strategic investors to build and operate Lien Chieu seaport according to the plan with an investment capital of VND 50,000 billion or more. This special policy, when implemented, will help Da Nang create new economic pillars, with seaports associated with logistics, Free Trade Zones, forming a dynamic area to attract investment, developing a modern infrastructure system...
Da Nang City aims to attract about 7 billion USD in registered investment capital by 2030. With key transport projects, Da Nang has been attracting more strategic investors to the city, opening a new growth "highway" for the future, to reach international standards.
