Help students not drop out of school after Tet

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên17/02/2024

Students dropping out of school after Tet is a common concern for many teachers and schools when the holiday lasts from 7-16 days (depending on the locality).

For example, Khanh Hoa has 14 days off for Tet (from February 5 to February 18), students will return to school on February 19 (the 10th day of Tet). The author has noticed that there are currently a number of reasons why students drop out of school after Tet.

Firstly, because parents are busy making a living all year round, they have no time to care for their children. Therefore, many children's studies decline, they become depressed, and are then lured by their friends to drop out of school. There are also many cases where parents hold the notion that their children do not need to study well, they just need to know how to read and write and go to work to earn money.

Second, some children have very difficult family circumstances, their parents do not have enough money to pay the second semester fees, so they have to let their children drop out of school after Tet. There are also some children who drop out of school because they want to work to earn money to spend or help their families. There are some cases where parents let their children stay home to get married, especially in mountainous areas with ethnic minorities, where child marriage still exists.

Third, teachers in general and homeroom teachers in particular have too much work to do so they cannot thoroughly understand the students’ family circumstances to find solutions to prevent them from dropping out of school right from the start. Only when students drop out of school do teachers encourage and help, but it is too late because “it is too late to lock the barn door after the horse has been stolen”.

To overcome the situation of students dropping out of school after Tet, we need to strengthen coordination between schools, families and local authorities, not only providing encouragement but also considering each situation to have specific measures to support both materially and spiritually such as: tuition exemption and reduction policies; tuition subsidies, scholarships for students from poor, near-poor and disadvantaged families.

For weak students at risk of dropping out, teachers should provide remedial classes early in the school year.

The school psychology counseling team needs to have a plan to help by calling on benefactors to sponsor each child with a "pair of loving leaves" or a "poor friend fund"... It is important to remember that teachers who do counseling need to proactively seek out students, not wait for them to come to them for counseling.

In terms of spirit, every week, the school psychological counseling team can proactively visit students at risk of dropping out of school. The psychological counseling team can coordinate with organizations such as the Youth Union, the Young Pioneers, the Labor Union and local authorities to encourage families and help poor students.

Each student has different life circumstances. Teachers can take advantage of the Tet holiday to visit students’ homes, learn about their family circumstances and help them in a timely manner. This is a practical and meaningful action that helps prevent students from dropping out of school.
