Dumb singing in the coastal areas of Quang Ninh , especially in Quang Yen town, is a unique folk song form that has existed for a long time and is in great need of preservation. It is extremely necessary to spread the art of dumb singing more and more widely in people's lives, contributing to the preservation and development of this traditional cultural beauty.

Since 2016, duets have been taught as extracurricular activities at many schools in Quang Yen town.

In Quang Yen, dum singing was introduced from the time when the first kings came to build dikes to reclaim land from the sea, building this land into villages. During that hard labor, dum singing was the lyrics and singing to dispel the hardship. And then dum singing was passed down from generation to generation, nurtured by the very source of folk culture...

Mr. Ngo Dinh Dung, Head of the Department of Culture and Information of Quang Yen Town, said: Quang Yen Town always cares and focuses on the work of educating and nurturing traditional music for the young generation. We have coordinated and directed, creating conditions to open free classes to teach dum singing for students in some schools; paying attention to guiding schools to organize many extracurricular activities, traditional music education, especially introducing dum singing into teaching in many schools; creating many useful playgrounds for folk culture for the young generation... Since 2003, the town has established a dum singing club, with many practical and useful activities. Dum singing art is also included in performances at festivals and folk art programs.

In the summer of 2024, Phong Coc and Phong Hai Ward Youth Union organized duets singing classes for students of all ages. The class was taught by Meritorious Artist Pham Thi Thanh Quyet (Phong Hai Ward), Head of the Quang Yen duets singing club, teaching the typical duets singing melodies of Quang Yen hometown.

Meritorious Artist Pham Thi Thanh Quyet - who has been struggling to develop the unique cultural beauty of dum singing for over 50 years, shared: In the face of the wave of contemporary music, attracting students to participate in the art form of dum singing is not easy, requiring the artist to be dedicated and passionate. In order for the children to be interested and actively participate in learning, I have to choose songs that are age-appropriate, easy to learn, and easy to remember to teach, especially dum songs that praise the homeland and country, thereby fostering love for the homeland in the younger generation.

Although duets are ancient melodies, not easy to sing, the students all practiced diligently, quickly grasped the melody and content of the songs and were quite excited to learn more about a unique folk culture of their homeland. Le Van Bao Nhat (Phong Hai ward) shared: I was very happy to participate in duets last summer. At first, I was not used to it so I found it a bit difficult to sing, but after a few lessons, when I knew the lyrics and melody, the songs became more familiar and easier to learn. Therefore, I attended duets regularly, without missing any lessons.

In addition to participating in the duet singing class at the Phong Hai Ward People's Committee headquarters, students also learn to sing and perform in the Coc communal house space to feel the value of intangible cultural heritage in the relic space. Every weekend evening, the Coc communal house space resounds with the tunes of the homeland. It is the combination of summer activities with the teaching of the cultural identity of the nation that has attracted students to attend summer activities more and more regularly.

In addition to practicing duets, since 2016, Meritorious Artist Pham Thi Thanh Quyet and other artists in the duets club have also participated in teaching duets at many schools in the town. This helps students understand more about local culture and spread and preserve it so that duets do not fade over time.

For over 20 years, Meritorious Artist Pham Thi Thanh Quyet has been traveling to every village where there are elderly people who know how to sing dum to collect ancient songs and carry out the mission of preserving ancient melodies. In 2003, Meritorious Artist Pham Thi Thanh Quyet published the book “Hat dum Ha Nam - Yen Hung”, which includes more than 2,000 ancient dum songs. The book has become a valuable resource for preserving and spreading traditional dum melodies. Currently, Meritorious Artist Pham Thi Thanh Quyet is also completing and preparing to publish another book on the art of dum singing.
