Ms. Hoang Tue Minh, Head of the Literature Department, Giang Vo Secondary School, Ba Dinh District (Hanoi) said that in previous years, students only needed to carefully study the content of the lessons in the textbooks, or even memorize them to do the exam, but this year's exam has changed.

The test will use materials outside of the textbook, so the first thing you need to do is to have a firm grasp of the genre's characteristics. In addition, you must practice reading and understanding materials from excerpts from poems, stories, etc. to have a firm grasp of the content and ideas, so that you can do the test correctly.

This year's Hanoi 10th grade entrance exam takes place over two days from June 7-8.

During the teaching process in class, for each genre, teachers have guided students in writing skills, creating a framework with enough ideas to write complete ideas. From understanding the genre, practicing reading comprehension, from now until the exam, students also need to spend a lot of time practicing questions and writing. After each essay, teachers can correct, grade and draw experience, correct mistakes to achieve the best performance.

Ms. Pham Thi Huong Thao, Head of the Social Science Group at Le Loi Secondary School, Hoan Kiem District (Hanoi), also affirmed that with the basic knowledge taught by teachers, from now until the exam, students need to spend time practicing how to do the test thoroughly.

Before doing the test, students need to read the test at least twice from top to bottom to get an overview of the test, then make a plan: Which test comes first, which test comes later; allocate time for each question. For example, easy questions and high-scoring questions should be done first.

Read the questions carefully to avoid misunderstanding the requirements, leading to mistakes and losing points. When reading the questions, you need to underline important words and at the same time outline your answers on scratch paper.

According to Ms. Thao, students only have 120 minutes to read the questions, outline and do the test, so they need to allocate time reasonably to avoid running out of time before finishing the test. According to the regulations, when the test-taking bell rings, the invigilator will ask the candidates to stop writing. An incomplete Literature test will result in a loss of points. Therefore, students should spend 20-25 minutes on reading comprehension; about 30 minutes on writing a paragraph, 60-65 minutes on social argumentation, and 5 minutes on reading and checking the writing.

Appreciate creativity

When starting to do the test, in part I there will be reading comprehension. Based on the sample test, there will be 5 questions, accounting for 4.0 points. There will be specific types as follows, students need to grasp to review the knowledge firmly:

Type 1: Questions based on genre characteristics and level of recognition, worth 0.5 points.

For example, poetry will include requirements on topic; theme; main inspiration; emotional flow; genre; genre characteristics...

The story requires a firm grasp of: Topic; theme; genre; narrative point of view; story situation; main character; main content; problematic details...

Type 2 is questions based on the characteristics of the genre, the level of recognition and understanding. This is a question that often appears in the form of a cluster question, worth 1.0 points. In which, point 1, the topic will require students to find images, words, details according to a topic, characteristics; point 2 is the requirement to perceive images, words, details, characters, feelings, and human emotions through what has just been found.

Type 3 includes questions about Vietnamese knowledge at the comprehension level, worth 1.0 points. In this type, the question usually requires you to specify the Vietnamese name you need to find and through which word in the text; state the function and meaning of that Vietnamese problem.

For example, the uses and typical meanings of each issue such as: Reduplication; word meaning; rhetorical devices; sentence types classified by speaking purpose; sentence types classified by grammatical structure; isolated components; linking methods; active and passive sentences...

In addition, students need to state the specific uses and meanings of the text, what associations, feelings, and emotions does it evoke?

Type 4 is a comprehension question based on genre characteristics and level of understanding, worth 1.0 point. For poetry, it usually requires comprehension of verses, poetic images, meaning of titles, etc.

For the story genre, students can be asked to find details, actions, character words; title...

Type 5 is a connecting question, worth 0.5 points. This type of question will ask students to draw lessons and messages from the text as well as what the author wants to advise readers through the work; relating to current life.

Part II is the writing part, the test will have 2 questions with 6 points. In which, type I is a paragraph writing requirement, accounting for 2 points, candidates may be asked to write a paragraph analyzing a poem; analyzing images in the poem; analyzing characters in the story; analyzing the story's theme...

Type 2 requires writing an argumentative essay, worth 4.0 points. From the knowledge of the types of essays you have learned, you will be prepared to write about a problem in life, a moral thought, or write an argumentative essay about an opinion (agree, disagree, two options); write about a bad habit; a problem that needs to be solved; a problem of concern...

Students have learned these types of exercises very carefully, but to expand their writing, they need to update information about social life and expand connections with reality to make their writing lively and attractive.

Note, the article must ensure the requirements of form, content, and expression. In particular, the form must ensure the correct structure of the essay/paragraph, the correct topic to be discussed as well as appropriate and convincing arguments and evidence. The writing style must be clear, coherent, logical, and convincing.

With the 2018 General Education Program, students no longer write in a stereotyped, one-way manner, but instead, creativity, new writing styles, and expressing personal opinions are emphasized.

"Therefore, in writing, to get a high score, the essay needs to express personal opinions, new and reasonable perspectives, and lively, unique and effective arguments," said Ms. Huong.

According to Ms. Huong, even during the learning and practice process, students need to practice the habit of taking 3-5 minutes to re-read the lesson, check, review the content, and correct any mistakes.

This year, Hanoi's 10th grade entrance exam will take place over two days from June 7-8. The Literature exam will be held first, on the morning of June 7, with a duration of 120 minutes.
