“Practical actions, prioritizing resources for children” is the theme of the Month of Action for Children in 2024. It can be said that over the years, our Party and State have always paid attention to and created the best conditions for children to develop comprehensively and have a safe and healthy living environment.
As the first country in Asia and the second in the world to ratify the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) in 1990, with the political commitments and leadership of the Party and State, the lives of Vietnamese children in all regions of the country have been continuously guaranteed. More and more children are protected, living, receiving health care, studying and being prioritized in welfare policies.
Article 100 of the 2016 Law on Children states: Parents, teachers, child care workers and family members have the responsibility to cultivate knowledge and skills to educate children about ethics, personality, rights and duties of children; create a safe environment, prevent accidents and injuries for children; prevent children from falling into special circumstances, at risk of being abused or being abused.
In the month of action for children, perhaps what we want to aim for is to create happy children. Education is not just about passing exams but more importantly, teaching students how to feel, adapt and live a happy life. At the same time, knowing how to respond and prevent abuse, not being surprised and confused when facing dangerous situations in life.
The term “Happy School” has gradually become familiar and important in the education sector worldwide. In addition to equipping students with knowledge and skills, how to create a happy school is a major focus of our country’s education sector.
To create a green, safe and equal environment for children, more than ever, we need the cooperation of the community, the sense of responsibility of schools, families and the whole society. So in that healthy and happy environment, there must be safety, love and respect for differences.
Sharing with the World and Vietnam , Professor Ha Vinh Tho, founder of the Eurasia Institute for Happiness and Well-Being; former Program Director of the Gross National Happiness Center in Bhutan once said that happiness is living a meaningful life, not only for yourself but also for others and making valuable contributions to society.
We live in a time of rapid change and disruption. The next generations will face unprecedented challenges, from climate change and ecological disaster to the rise of artificial intelligence and the radical restructuring of the job market and the workplace.
The current education model is largely addressing yesterday’s problems. But to face the future with confidence, we need to rethink the role, methods and functions of education, in order to equip young people with the skills and competencies needed to meet these challenges.
“Exams, scores and tests are part of the education system, but they are not the ultimate goal. The purpose of education is to help young people develop their full potential, intellectually and emotionally. At the same time, equip young people with skills, abilities and solid moral values to guide them in life,” said Professor Ha Vinh Tho.
In fact, in the era of artificial intelligence (AI), academic knowledge is important but not enough. Children need many other skills such as social skills, creativity and teamwork, emotional skills. To do so, children do not have to study for exams; consider studying to acquire knowledge, not to pass exams.
Furthermore, machines will take over many tasks, the important thing that education aims for is to create kind, compassionate “products” and “creative experts” in the future. It is extremely important to personalize and focus on each student’s own abilities instead of “uniform” them all.
In particular, children must inherit a healthy environment. Parents should change their mindset in setting goals for their children. Although we talk a lot about children's rights, it is sad that one of the causes of children's depression and even suicide is related to studying.
Meanwhile, because of the worry of "making ends meet", many parents have not cared, been close to, or shared with their children. The increasingly "widening" distance makes many children feel lonely in their own homes. Therefore, more than anyone else, parents should learn how to "be friends" with their children, bridge the gap, understand and respect their children's opinions. That is also the way to create a happy, healthy environment for children...
