Oil prices could continue to fall as global supplies increase, including plans by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies (OPEC+) to lift voluntary production cuts in the coming months, executives at the Financial Times Global Commodities Summit in Lausanne said, Reuters reported.

“There are still some risks to supply, but overall, supply will be sufficient for the next few years,” said Russell Hardy, CEO of Vitol.

“There will be more supply in the second half of the year, OPEC will start to ease production cuts, and the market has anticipated this, adjusting oil prices from around $80 a barrel to around $70 a barrel,” Hardy said in a keynote interview at the conference.

Mr. Torbjorn Tornqvist, CEO of Gunvor, also commented that supply growth is likely to exceed demand.

“Oil prices are hovering around $70 a barrel, and that’s probably a fair price,” he said, adding that if there are no disruptions to supply, prices could fall a little further.

Ben Luckock, head of oil at Trafigura, expressed concerns about the demand outlook, citing the possibility that Chinese oil demand has peaked, while both the US and European economies show no signs of improvement.

"The Iran issue is the biggest uncertainty that could affect the supply-demand balance," said Luckock, adding that the new US administration is also concerned about the impact of its "maximum pressure" policy on Iran on oil prices.
