In the first two months of the year, Vietnam exported more than 27,400 tons of pepper of all kinds, according to preliminary statistics from the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA). Of these, the US continued to be the largest export market with nearly 5,900 tons, accounting for 21.5% of total exports.
However, the US's application of a new reciprocal tax on imported pepper has caused concern in the industry. On April 4, the American Spice Association (ASTA) officially sent a petition to the US government regarding the tax policy recently issued by President Donald Trump.
Laura Shumow, executive director of ASTA, said spices are essential ingredients in many dishes and are indispensable to the food industry. She expressed concern that the new tariffs will have negative consequences for the spice industry as well as consumers in the United States.
ASTA is asking the government to exempt spices that cannot be grown in the United States, such as pepper, vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg. These spices require tropical climates and cannot be produced on a large scale domestically. The tariffs do not create jobs or encourage domestic production, but instead increase costs for food manufacturers, restaurants, and consumers.
In addition to the tax issue, experts also warn of the risk of supply shortage if pepper production in major countries such as Vietnam, Indonesia and Brazil does not recover soon. The increasing demand for pepper in the global market, especially in the food and spice processing industry, could push prices to continue to rise in the coming time.
