Pig prices continue to rise, meat supply is exceeding demand

* The live hog market in the North recorded an increase of VND 1,000/kg in Lao Cai, Thai Nguyen and Ha Nam provinces, currently at VND 58,000/kg - the highest in the region.

With the same increase, live pigs in Nam Dinh province were adjusted to 57,000 VND/kg. The remaining provinces and cities had prices unchanged compared to yesterday.

Today's live pig price in the North is around 57,000 - 58,000 VND/kg.

* Pig prices in the Central and Central Highlands regions increased slightly in some places.

Specifically, live pigs in Quang Binh are being purchased at 55,000 VND/kg, an increase of 2,000 VND/kg.

After increasing by 1,000 VND/kg, the provinces of Quang Tri, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai and Ha Tinh all adjusted the purchase price to about 54,000 - 56,000 VND/kg - depending on the region.

Currently, the price of live pigs in the Central and Central Highlands regions is around 54,000 - 56,000 VND/kg.

* In the Southern region, the price of live pigs increased slightly by VND 1,000/kg in some localities. Specifically, Long An and Can Tho provinces both adjusted the price of live pigs to VND 55,000/kg.

After a slight increase of 1,000 VND/kg, traders in Dong Thap, An Giang and Bac Lieu provinces purchased live pigs at 53,000 VND/kg.

The remaining provinces have stable purchase prices compared to yesterday.

The price of live pigs in the Southern region today fluctuates between 52,000 - 56,000 VND/kg.

* Currently, the average price of live pigs nationwide is 54,800 VND/kg, nearly 4,000 VND/kg higher than the Chinese market. In particular, the North is the region with the highest price in the country at 57,300 VND/kg, the Central region at 53,800 VND/kg, the Southeast at 55,100 VND/kg and the Southwest at 53,200 VND/kg.

With the large price difference between the North and the South, more pigs from the South will be brought to the North.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Industry and Trade stated that the supply of pork is exceeding demand. To limit the situation of pork flooding the market and surplus before and after Tet, the department has mobilized businesses and retailers to implement a stimulus program for this item.

For the first time, supermarket businesses simultaneously launched promotions for pork products at a rate of 10-40%.
