Malaysian rubber companies are likely to maintain profitability despite challenges posed by global uncertainties, according to RHB Research.

In a report, RHB Research said that the first quarter of 2025 could be the industry's worst quarter, as businesses in the industry forecast a sharp decline in sales.

According to the research firm, the situation coincides with the risk of losing market share in the European Union (EU) market as China continues to shift to markets outside the US, increasing the risk to the profits of domestic businesses.

“However, the gradual adjustment of staffing and lower raw material prices since March will help glove manufacturers to have better business results in the second quarter of 2025 after the inventory reduction cycle,” the report stated.

The last traded price of natural rubber latex was USD 1.54/kg in March 2025, compared to an average price of USD 1.56/kg in February of the same year.

“In the coming period, natural rubber prices are expected to return to normal after the winter in Thailand, a major rubber producing country. However, prices may remain high due to unpredictable weather, aging rubber plantations and a severe shortage of tapping labor,” RHB Research explained.

Another positive factor helping the industry grow is that the number of requests from customers increased in May.

According to RHB Research, this indicates that the inventory adjustment cycle is coming to an end, as the over-ordering period from US customers in 2024 will last only 6 months. Therefore, RHB Research maintains its view that the inventory build-up will take place in the second half of this year, thereby positively impacting the profitability of glove manufacturers in Malaysia.

On the issue of US tariffs, the research firm said that Malaysian gloves – which are heavily exported to the US – could be subject to reciprocal tariffs. “While the situation remains unclear, we believe the consequences could be significant, not only for the glove industry but also for the entire US healthcare sector, which is heavily dependent on these products,” the report noted.
