Is Vietnamese Gen Alpha stuck in academic and technological pressure?

Every school year ends, instead of eagerly awaiting a summer full of experiences, many urban Vietnamese children continue to fall into a rut - either with a packed extra-curricular schedule or immersed in their phone screens.

The “connected but isolated” generation

Gen Alpha is the first generation born in the “digital age”, growing up with the Internet, AI and tablets. But does unlimited connectivity really make this generation free? A child can text with friends all day, but is awkward when communicating directly. Children can access a huge amount of knowledge with just a click, but lack the practical experiences to form independent thinking.

Are academic pressures, dependence on technology, and lack of opportunities to explore the world turning Gen Alpha into a “connected but isolated” generation? Without change, we will have a generation that is good at technology but lacks life skills, smart but lonely, knowledgeable but difficult to adapt to the real world.

So, is the Alpha Gen being suffocated by the pressures of education and technology? Is it time we find a way out for the next generation?

The concerns of Millennials parents

According to statistics, the school year in Vietnam lasts about 35 weeks, equivalent to 175 school days, with a tight schedule and high achievement requirements. Many children, after school hours, continue to attend extra classes in the evening and on weekends, which means that the total study time is up to 50-60 hours/week, higher than the average in many developed countries. For many children, summer is not a time to rest, but to continue the "race" to study. This not only creates mental stress but also limits children's time to play and develop comprehensively.

In addition, the explosion of digital technology has changed the way children approach the world. UNICEF's survey results show that 82% of Vietnamese children aged 12-13 use the Internet every day. For those aged 14-15, this figure is up to 93%. The time Vietnamese children spend on social networks is 5-7 hours/day. Excessive exposure to technology not only affects physical health but also causes psychological problems such as anxiety, depression and reduces the ability to communicate directly.

Faced with this situation, many Millennial parents - Generation Y with a different mindset - realize that forcing their children to study extra during the summer is not the optimal solution. They also do not want their children to spend too much time in front of the screen. They not only want their children to study well but also want them to have real-life experiences and develop soft skills. They are looking for a new educational method where children can relax and develop skills naturally. And this need is more urgent than ever.

Choose “Studycation” – Choose a new education model

The solution to this problem does not lie in eliminating technology altogether or reverting to traditional education methods. Families have turned to summer programs that combine learning with experience, helping children develop comprehensively in thinking, social skills and adaptability.

A 12-year-old girl in Hanoi last year was allowed by her parents to participate in a summer program with a group of multinational friends as a way to both play and learn. “My child had a summer vacation that she said was “beyond wonderful”. She learned a lot from practice, developed her artistic talent, and most importantly, she was no longer closed off but much more daring. She was confident enough to present her project in front of many other friends. I felt positive energy and happiness in her,” Ms. Nhung (Hoan Kiem District) happily shared when recalling her child’s summer last year.

It is a summer program following the “Studycation” trend, combining study and vacation, helping children not only acquire knowledge but also know how to apply it in life. And it is time for the Alpha generation to have a real summer - a place where they can study, play, and explore the real world like that.

Summer Tailored for Gen Alpha with ILA Summer Never Ends 2025

Most traditional summer camps only focus on fun, entertainment or some single extracurricular activities. Meanwhile, ILA Summer Never Ends 2025 with its “Studycation” experiential education model will bring children an exciting time, not only learning but also experiencing, exploring and practicing global thinking.

During the process of researching and understanding trends, educators at ILA – with more than 30 years of experience – realized that children today cannot only learn from books but need to be equipped with practical knowledge and skills.

Therefore, the summer program at ILA focuses on core elements: Equipping children with 100% English communication skills to integrate with international friends as well as easily absorb world knowledge. When having the opportunity to connect with international friends, work in groups in multicultural activities, children will be trained in adaptability.

In addition, when participating in practical projects with high applicability, children will acquire knowledge more proactively, know how to solve problems, and practice critical thinking. Artistic, sports, and performance activities in the program will help children discover their potential, express their talents, and unleash their creativity.

Academics are the foundation, but critical thinking, creativity, teamwork and effective communication are the keys to success. Generation Alpha cannot grow up with just screens and books, they need opportunities to experience, to make mistakes, to challenge themselves and to step out of their comfort zones.

Let ILA Summer Never Ends 2025 open the door to a meaningful summer - where children learn, play, and grow! Many parents have chosen ILA Summer Never Ends 2025 and received early registration scholarships of up to 14 million VND to help their children make a breakthrough - what about you?
