45 years ago, in response to the urgent need to manage and protect the sovereignty of the sea, islands and continental shelf of the Fatherland, on February 12, 1979, the Ministry of National Defense issued a decision to establish Brigade 170 under Naval Region 1 with the initial task of closely coordinating with the forces of Region 1 and related units to manage and firmly protect the sea and support the northern islands of the Fatherland.

The establishment of the 170th Naval Brigade is of great significance in the process of building the Navy in general and Naval Region 1 in particular, marking a new development of the Naval forces.

By August 1979, Brigade 170 had basically stabilized and was operational to meet the requirements of combat missions. The Brigade mobilized more than 400 ships to travel nearly 29,000 nautical miles, carrying more than 2,700 tons of cargo and more than 1,760 people to the islands safely; actively participating in maintaining political security, order and safety at sea and on islands in the north of the Fatherland.
