Additional varieties such as OM 429, RVT, ST5, ST20, ST24, ST25 are suitable for specific production areas. Groups of medium quality varieties such as IR 50404, ML 202, OM 576 are only planted on less than 20% of the area to avoid difficulty in consumption.

According to the Vietnam Food Association, 5% broken rice was offered at $400 a tonne, up from $394 a tonne last week. A trader in the Mekong Delta predicted that rice prices would stabilize in the next few sessions due to abundant supply.

Indian rice prices fell to their lowest since June 2023 last week due to weak demand and abundant supplies, while Thai rice prices remained steady at their lowest in more than two years.

India's 5% broken rice was offered at $395-$401 a tonne, down from $403-$410 last week. A trader in New Delhi said buyers were slow to place orders or even delay them as prices continued to fall. The Indian government has allowed exports of 100% broken rice since early March after a ban from September 2022.

In Thailand, 5% broken rice remained unchanged at $405 a tonne from last week. Traders said prices were little changed due to weak demand and the impact of the exchange rate. A Bangkok-based trader said the sluggish market and stiff competition from Indian and Vietnamese rice could make it difficult for Thai rice exports in 2025.

Meanwhile, the Bangladesh government plans to lift the ban on fragrant rice exports to boost trade. As the world’s third-largest rice producer, Bangladesh mainly consumes domestically, but hopes to increase exports thanks to the new policy.
