On the afternoon of August 24, news from the Office of the People's Committee of Ca Mau province said that the Chairman of the People's Committee of Ca Mau province had just signed a decision to declare an emergency situation regarding natural disasters related to coastal erosion.
6 particularly serious coastal landslides occurred
According to the People's Committee of Ca Mau province, due to the impact of climate change, rising sea levels have caused erosion over a long period of time, making many sections of the protective forest belt increasingly thinner, some landslides have deepened, and the frog's jaw has eroded inward. Especially, during the rainy and stormy season, rising sea levels combined with big waves and strong winds have caused particularly dangerous coastal erosion in 6 sections, with a total length of nearly 29.2 km.
Chairman of Ca Mau Provincial People's Committee announced a natural disaster emergency situation for coastal erosion in Ca Mau province.
Specifically, in Ngoc Hien district, there are a series of serious landslides, such as the Hoc Nang estuary with particularly dangerous coastal erosion, with a length of 2.5 km; the section from Canal Five to Canal Chum Gong with particularly dangerous landslides with a length of 4.1 km; the section from Canal 5 O Ro to Vam Xoay, with particularly dangerous landslides with a length of 7.1 km. In particular, the section from Kien Vang to Ong Ta has particularly dangerous coastal erosion with a length of 6.4 km (of which, the section from Kien Vang to Vam Lung, with a length of 3.3 km; the section from Vam Lung towards Rach Goc, with a length of 1.7 km; the section from Rach Goc estuary to Ong Ta, with a length of 1.4 km).
In addition, other localities such as Dam Doi district, the estuary section at Luu Hoa Thanh hamlet, Tan Thuan commune also experienced particularly dangerous landslides, with a total length of 1 km; Nam Can district, the section from Ho Gui to Bo De, had particularly dangerous landslides with a total length of 8 km.
Threats to residential areas, schools and government offices
According to the People's Committee of Ca Mau province, landslides in the area are increasing. With the current rate of landslides, if not handled promptly, there is a risk of threatening concentrated residential areas in Dat Mui commune (Ngoc Hien district), Tan Thuan commune (Dam Doi district); schools, and government offices. In addition, the power grid system, people's production land, especially important infrastructure works of the Ho Chi Minh route in Ngoc Hien district are also threatened by landslides.
Currently, the Chairman of the People's Committee of Ca Mau province has assigned the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to coordinate with the People's Committees of Ngoc Hien district, Nam Can district and Dam Doi district to demarcate areas with particularly dangerous landslides, establish safety corridors; and arrange forces to monitor landslide developments. At the same time, organize surveys, select solutions and establish investment procedures for the above-mentioned landslide prevention and control projects according to emergency situations, and submit them to competent authorities for appraisal and approval according to regulations.
The leaders of the People's Committee of Ca Mau province also requested districts and towns to proactively deploy forces to closely monitor the development of landslides, limit and prevent landslides from progressing faster and becoming more dangerous. The Department of Planning and Investment of Ca Mau was assigned to preside over and coordinate with the Department of Finance and related units to review, study and advise on the capital allocation plan to implement the above-mentioned urgent project.
Ca Mau province currently has a total of more than 180 km of eroded coastline, along with 425 km of eroded and at-risk riverbanks. The entire province has had more than 5,200 hectares of land and protective forests (equivalent to the average area of a commune in the province) swept away by erosion.
To respond to and mitigate the damage caused by landslides, Ca Mau has recently invested in building nearly 56 km of coastal protection embankments, with a total cost of more than VND 1,700 billion; more than 9 km of riverbank protection embankments, with a cost of more than VND 390 billion. The completed investment projects have been effective, reducing waves, preventing landslides and initially creating sedimentation, creating beaches, and restoring nearly 1,000 hectares of protective forests. However, the current investment level still does not meet the requirements for landslide prevention in the area.
