Recently, Binh Duong province announced that students taking the entrance exam for grade 10 of high school in the 2025-2026 school year must take three exams in Literature, Math, and English. The test time for each specific subject is 120 minutes for Math and Literature, and 60 minutes for English.
The Department of Education and Training of Cao Bang province announced that English has been selected as the third subject, in addition to Math and Literature, required for the 10th grade high school entrance exam in the 2025-2026 school year.
Accordingly, students taking the exam at high schools and provincial boarding schools for ethnic minorities will take three subjects: Math, Literature, and English. Students taking the exam at specialized high schools will take an additional specialized subject in addition to the general subjects.
Previously, the Department of Education and Training of Lang Son province also issued a notice on the subjects in the 10th grade entrance exam for public high schools in the 2025-2026 school year. Accordingly, the subjects include: Math, Literature and English. For candidates applying to Chu Van An High School for the Gifted, in addition to the general subjects, students will take an additional specialized subject exam according to their registered wishes.
The Department of Education and Training of Bac Kan also announced that the third subject of the 10th grade entrance exam for the 2025-2026 school year in the area is English.
Nghe An Department of Education and Training said that the 10th grade entrance exam for the 2025-2026 school year will be conducted with 3 subjects including Literature, Math and Foreign Language (English and French). This is also the subject that Nghe An education sector has conducted for many years. The Foreign Language subject will be tested in the form of multiple-choice objective tests, with a test time of 60 minutes.
Thua Thien - Hue announced that in addition to the two required subjects of Literature and Math, the province has chosen a third subject, Foreign Language (English, French or Japanese).
Lam Dong also chose English as the third subject in the 10th grade entrance exam for the 2025-2026 school year. English will be tested in 60 minutes, Math in 90 minutes and Literature in 120 minutes.
Thus, up to now, most provinces and cities have chosen or planned the third subject in the 10th grade public high school exam for the 2025-2026 school year to be Foreign Language (or English).

The 10th grade entrance exam will include Math, Literature and a third subject for local choice, but this will change after three years and will be announced after the end of the first semester.
The above content is included in the regulations on secondary and high school admissions issued by the Ministry of Education and Training on the morning of January 8.
Accordingly, provinces can choose to have entrance exams, admission to grade 10 or a combination. For entrance exams, the exam includes Math, Literature and a third subject (or a combined exam). The third subject is selected by the Department of Education and Training from subjects assessed by scores, including: Foreign Language 1, Civic Education, Natural Sciences, History and Geography, Technology, and Information Technology. However, provinces and cities cannot choose a subject for more than three consecutive years.
The time for the Literature test is 120 minutes, Math is 90 minutes, the third subject is 60 or 90 minutes, the combined test is 90 or 120 minutes. Provinces and cities can announce the third subject after the end of the first semester but no later than March 31 every year, in order to achieve the goal of comprehensive education, avoiding rote learning and biased learning.
The Ministry of Education and Training said that the new regulations are built on three core principles. The first is not to put pressure or cost on parents, students and society. The second is to promote comprehensive education, initially preparing students with the qualities and abilities to have the conditions to study at a higher level or in a career orientation. The third is to build unified regulations nationwide.
2025 is the first year that the 10th grade exam is organized according to the new general education program (2018 program). Compared to the old program, many subjects are taught in an integrated manner such as History - Geography and Natural Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Biology). Therefore, the orientation of the exam questions, content and number of subjects are of interest to parents and candidates.
Previously, the number of subjects for the 10th grade entrance exam was decided by localities. However, the Ministry believes that there should be a common regulation to unify nationwide. At the end of September 2024, this agency first proposed to take three subjects, with the third subject being randomly drawn, but was opposed by public opinion. In the draft in October, the Ministry of Education and Training expected the third subject to be changed annually to avoid biased learning and rote learning; the announcement date is before March 31.
