2025 is the 8th year that Ho Chi Minh City National University has organized the competency assessment exam. Compared to previous years, the first round of this year's exam has a record high number of candidates registering for the exam. Dr. Nguyen Quoc Chinh, Director of the Center for Testing and Training Quality Assurance - Ho Chi Minh City National University, said that the first round of the 2025 competency assessment exam had 130,647 candidates registered, of which 128,331 candidates completed the exam procedures - the highest ever. Ho Chi Minh City has many exam sites with 51,074 candidates taking the exam here and is also the locality with the most students registering for the exam (40,452 students).
The issue that many candidates are concerned about is the competency assessment test when this year candidates study according to the 2018 General Education Program, there are subjects that they will not study. Dr. Nguyen Quoc Chinh informed: The 2025 competency assessment test still has 120 questions, candidates will do the test in 150 minutes. From this year, the assessment test structure has been adjusted to match the 2018 General Education Program. Specifically, the test still has 3 parts. Part 1: Using language (Vietnamese, English) only increases the number of questions from 40 to 60 questions. Part 2: The structure of the 2024 test is mathematics - logic - data analysis with 30 questions, while in 2025 it will only be mathematics with 30 questions.

The biggest adjustment is in part 3. The structure of the 2024 exam is to solve problems in the fields of chemistry, physics, biology, geography, and history with 50 questions, while the structure of the 2025 exam is scientific thinking with logical content - data analysis, scientific reasoning (30 questions).
The 2025 exam is to provide context and theory for candidates to solve problems. The exam is designed in that direction to be suitable for all students studying the 2018 General Education Program.
According to Dr. Nguyen Quoc Chinh, the choice of subjects by students according to the 2018 General Education Program is very diverse. Therefore, the adjustment of the structure is to match the trend of choosing diverse subjects of candidates in the 2018 General Education Program. The adjustment is also to ensure fairness and create equal opportunities in accessing higher education for all candidates. From this year, candidates taking the competency assessment test will be granted an electronic certificate of exam results (no paper certificate of exam results will be granted). Candidates can download the certificate from their account and use it to register for admission. The results of the competency assessment test are currently used by more than 100 universities and colleges in and outside the Ho Chi Minh City National University system for admission. Depending on each school, the results of the first round or both rounds may be used for admission and some majors may not use the results of the competency assessment test for admission. Therefore, candidates need to follow the admission plan of the school/major they want to apply for.
