(Dan Tri) - The design and construction contract is worth RM4.3 billion, equivalent to USD998.5 million for the Xizhi Donghu MRT line in Taiwan (China), with additional items worth up to RM10.8 billion (USD2.5 billion).
Gamuda Berhad (Gamuda), a leading regional engineering and construction group, has made its mark by winning the RM4.3 billion (US$998 million) Xizhi Donghu MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) project in Taiwan. This is Gamuda’s seventh major infrastructure project in Taiwan, strengthening the group’s position in the international market.
The project was awarded by the New Taipei City government to an unincorporated joint venture between Gamuda (75%) and two local partners, MiTAC Information Technology Corp (15%) and Dong Pi Co Limited (10%). With a 75% stake, Gamuda said it would undertake the bulk of the work, with a contract value of up to RM3.2 billion (US$735.6 million).
This design and construction project is expected to be completed in 7 years, with main items including: 5.78 km of viaduct and track; 6 elevated stations, along with essential systems such as trains, power supply, signals, platform gates, communication systems, central monitoring, automatic toll collection and maintenance equipment at the depot.
In addition, the joint venture is also ready to undertake additional works worth RM10.8 billion (US$2.5 billion) if required. These include the maintenance depot for the Xizhi Donghu Line and the track system for two extension lines: the Keelung Line MRT and the Minsheng Line MRT. Gamuda’s share of the contract value from the additional works will be approximately RM8.1 billion (US$1.86 billion). These works are expected to be awarded before the completion of the main project, bringing the total value of the entire project to approximately RM15.1 billion (US$3.47 billion).
The MRT line will run within Taipei's Neihu District and New Taipei City's Xizhi District, and is expected to make a significant contribution to Taiwan's (China) urban transportation network.
Speaking about the project, a Gamuda representative said: "This is our biggest achievement in Taiwan (China) since entering the market 20 years ago. This success is a testament to Gamuda's ability to win large-scale projects in competitive international markets, and reflects the strong confidence that Taiwanese authorities have in our expertise and project implementation capabilities."
The Xizhi Donghu MRT project is an important part of New Taipei City's large-scale infrastructure development strategy to meet the growing mobility needs of urban residents.
Gamuda’s success in Taiwan (China) began with the implementation of the award-winning Kaohsiung MRT Orange Line in 2008 (contracted in 2002). Since then, Gamuda has been instrumental in the development of Taiwan (China)’s modern transport infrastructure, including the RM2.13 billion (US$489.6 million) Taoyuan City MRT Project in 2022 and the RM3.45 billion (US$793 million) Kaohsiung MRT Line in 2023. In addition, the group has also completed and handed over the Guantang Sea Bridge in October 2023, and is currently implementing the Taipei Port Seawall and the 161kV underground transmission line from Songshu to Guanfeng.
In June 2024, Gamuda was announced by Institutional Investor Research (II Research) - a global independent research organization - as one of the top 3 leading enterprises in Asia in the field of construction and infrastructure development (excluding Japan). Over the past nearly three decades, Gamuda Land, a member of the group, has developed many modern urban areas and prosperous communities in many countries and territories.
Gamuda's success in Taiwan (China) began with the implementation of the Kaohsiung MRT Orange Line, awarded in 2002. Since then, Gamuda has contributed to the development of Taiwan's modern transport infrastructure.
Present in Vietnam since 2007, Gamuda Land Vietnam has built two green urban areas, Gamuda City in Hanoi and Celadon City in Ho Chi Minh City. Up to now, Gamuda Land has expanded its scale with a total of 7 projects in Vietnam.
