The Friends tab is part of Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s effort to restore the original spirit of the Facebook app, or “OG Facebook,” as he calls it. In a post introducing the feature on his personal account, Mark Zuckerberg said there would be more “OG Facebooks” in the future.

As the name suggests, this tab only shows the latest posts from a user's Facebook friends instead of suggested content. This includes Stories, Reels, statuses, birthdays, and friend requests.

Facebook’s news feed remains the primary way users find and engage with content on the service, and Meta is increasingly using AI to suggest content from across the platform that’s tailored to each person’s tastes.

Zuckerberg hinted at “OG Facebook” on a conference call with analysts in January. He said “a lot of people use Facebook every day” and believed there was a chance the app would have a bigger cultural impact than it does today. He wanted to return to the “original” days of Facebook.

In a Facebook video, Meta’s boss compares the new feature to the experience of using social networks on a laptop in 2008. Currently, the Friends tab is only available in the US and Canada, with no clear date for when it will expand to other markets.
