Since the 90s of the last century, European tourists have known about Tam Coc - Bich Dong, among them, the most are French. Ms. Do Thi Bich Hue, owner of Lys homestay (Ninh Hai, Hoa Lu) recalls that once while rowing a boat, a French guest told her that they came here because they saw the movie "Indochine", filmed in Tam Coc, Ninh Binh from 1920 to 1950, telling the story of a French family and a tragic but emotional love triangle.
After the film was released in the 90s, many French tourists wanted to explore the scenes that appeared in the film. Then, the beautiful scenery of Tam Coc - Bich Dong was spread by word of mouth and European tourists came to Tam Coc to experience the wild natural beauty, as well as the simple, hard-working people here.
Sitting on a small boat gliding gently on the Ngo Dong River, Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan (currently living in Ho Chi Minh City) silently listened to the boatman explain the beautiful scenery of Tam Coc. She said that when she was young and lived in Hanoi, she was an excellent student and was sent by her school to visit the ancient capital of Hoa Lu and Tam Coc-Bich Dong. At that time, "tourism" was a rather strange word, but here, the wharf and boats were bustling, including quite a few foreign visitors. In addition to the mountains and beautiful scenery, we students were also very interested in the hand-embroidered products sold by the locals on the boats, so each of us chose to buy a product as a souvenir. Ms. Lan expressed that after 30 years of returning, she was very happy because the natural landscape and unique cultural features of Tam Coc were still preserved almost intact by the locals. Tourism services have become much more diverse and professional.
Hoa Lu, a thousand-year-old land, has gone through many ups and downs but still bears the footprints of our ancestors, marking important milestones in human history and the history of the Vietnamese nation.
Comrade Nguyen Cao Tan, Deputy Director of the Department of Tourism, said: In Ninh Hai, more than 700 years ago, King Tran Thai Tong established a hermitage and built the Vu Lam Palace, becoming a solid base for the Tran Dynasty army and people in the second and third resistance wars against the Yuan-Mongol army. This is also the place where Buddha King Tran Nhan Tong became a monk before going to Yen Tu to establish the Truc Lam Zen sect, which is imbued with Vietnamese cultural identity.
In addition to the historical relics of the farming process along the rivers connecting the limestone valleys, the people here have created characteristics for the wet rice culture, creating unique cultural and aesthetic values in the unique geological and geomorphological heritage space of the earth. Today, the people of Hoa Lu still preserve a series of festivals and historical relics, these values are being exploited by Ninh Binh, enriching tourism products.
Not only is Tam Coc - Bich Dong blessed with picturesque, captivating scenery, it also attracts tourists with experiences that few other places have.
Here, there is the traditional Van Lam lace embroidery village, which is over 700 years old. In the past, the needles of Van Lam village specialized in embroidering costumes, pants, shirts, hats of the ceremonial team, umbrellas, parasols, and robes, to serve the rituals and ceremonies of the spiritual and cultural life of the feudal dynasties of our country. Today, the lace embroidery profession is still preserved and developed by the people with a series of new products, with a more modern breath: tablecloths, curtains, bed covers, pillows, fashion clothes,...
In addition to creating beautiful, eye-catching products, Van Lam now also focuses on display spaces to attract tourists to the craft village. Visitors can participate in experiential activities at local households, receive embroidery instructions from skilled craftsmen, and can make products themselves according to their own ideas and designs. In addition, when participating in the production process, visitors can also learn about the subtleties and traditional culture of the land and people here, conveyed through each work.
Jarmaine, a tourist from Canada, shared: "It's been a long time since I've seen the artisans making such beautiful embroidery products. I've also experienced some embroidery, and I really enjoyed it. When I return to my country, I will introduce this embroidery village to my friends so that everyone can come and have interesting experiences like me."
In addition to the interesting experiences with embroidery, in Tam Coc, visitors can also cycle on shady roads, across endless rice fields; participate in community activities such as cooking, fishing, rice planting... especially riding an ox cart to see the scenery is also an experience you should try when coming to Ninh Hai.
Tam Coc field is honored as one of the five most beautiful rice fields in Vietnam. Its attraction comes not only from the "hand" of nature but also from the intersection between nature and human, between the tranquility of the land and sky and the livelihood activities of the local people.
To highlight the tourism products in Tam Coc, in 2022, the idea of an artistic rice field in the shape of a festival flag has spread a positive effect on the "Golden Color of Tam Coc - Trang An" Tourism Week. Following that success, to serve this year's Tourism Week, the Director of Xuan Truong Private Construction Enterprise came up with the idea of depicting the painting "Ly Ngu Vong Nguyet" on a rice field of more than 9,500 m2, aiming to enhance the value of agricultural activities through the image of rice plants.
In feng shui, carp has a very important meaning, carp is associated with the image of "carp jumping over the dragon gate". Therefore, the painting "carp watching the moon" represents the aspiration, effort and strong will to overcome all difficulties to reach success. In particular, the image of carp is also a symbol of luck, good things. The owner of this idea wants the painting of carp watching the moon to be depicted using the material of rice plants to pray for a year of national peace and prosperity, favorable weather, and bountiful crops.
According to Mr. Hoang Thanh Phong, Director of Tam Coc - Bich Dong Tourist Area Management Board: In the summer, Tam Coc is brilliant with golden rice fields, and in the fall and winter, we are developing the idea of planting water lilies on the Ngo Dong River. This is a native flower, with good growth ability, long blooming time, bold flower color creating a river of flowers. From the agricultural products of the indigenous people, we will create a "4-season" Tam Coc, with its own characteristics, avoiding overlap with other tourism products.
Ninh Binh Tourism Week is held annually during the golden season of Tam Coc, contributing to honoring the traditional cultural heritage values of the nation, expressing respect and deep gratitude to the ancestors who built and defended the country, honoring the image of the land and people of Ninh Binh, beautiful, friendly, wishing for peace and international integration. Surely this will be a series of events that create a good impression, lingering in the hearts of everyone and spreading positively to domestic and international friends.
