(Fatherland) - From a painting workshop located in the middle of Ha Thai lacquer village (Thuong Tin), artist Tran Cong Dung has pioneered the transformation of this quintessential craft village painting into a unique tourist experience product that attracts visitors every day.
Recently, Hanoi has launched a new craft village tourism route called "South Thang Long - Hanoi Heritage Road" including 2 routes Thanh Oai - Ung Hoa - My Duc and Thanh Tri - Thuong Tin - Phu Xuyen. Ha Thai lacquer craft village (Duyen Thai, Thuong Tin) is one of the unique tourist destinations to experience and learn about a quintessential product of Hanoi's traditional handicrafts.
Painter Tran Cong Dung has a painting and lacquer product workshop in Ha Thai, Thuong Tin. Not only stopping at paintings, Mr. Dung also finds a new direction for craft village products by increasing the application of lacquer to everyday items, bringing high efficiency and aesthetics.
Painter Tran Cong Dung confided that his hometown is Tuyen Quang. His affinity with art made him stay in Hanoi and choose to open a workshop in Ha Thai lacquer village. From the applicability of lacquer, Mr. Dung soon thought of turning the quintessential art of lacquer into a tourism product. Since 2016, Mr. Dung has pioneered the experiment of experiential tourism in making lacquer products.
Currently, Mr. Dung's workshop regularly welcomes guests to "learn composition", mainly foreigners, who come to learn to better understand the traditional craft of lacquer.
For the simplest and most convenient experience for tourists, Mr. Dung chose eggshell inlaid lacquer for tourists to experience.
Customers will use hammers to lightly tap on the blank to complete the product.

Over the past 9 years, artist Dung Di’s workshop has welcomed thousands of international visitors to experience. According to him, within a few hours, visitors can complete a product and take it home the same day.
"Almost every day there are groups coming to experience. At least one group, at most 3-4 groups/day. Most of them are international groups. They feel very excited when experiencing making lacquer by themselves" - Mr. Tran Cong Dung added.
In the final stage, visitors can also choose to plate gold or silver to further complete the work.
Previously, the experience of making lacquerware only appeared at the workshop of artist Dung Di. Currently, this activity is also being piloted in many other households in Ha Thai village.
A corner of artist Tran Cong Dung's workshop is filled with foreign tourists experiencing lacquer making.
Every day, Mr. Dung still enthusiastically guides customers from eggshell inlay and other materials and makes small works right in the workshop.
What he hopes most is that more and more artists, especially young artists, continue to use traditional materials to create and contribute to traditional art.
According to Mr. Dung, turning lacquer into a tourism product is not easy. Because lacquer is a very complicated and laborious product in the production process, it takes a long time to complete. Meanwhile, the experience product needs a shorter time because each experience only lasts no more than 1-2 hours. How to simplify the production but not reduce the quintessential values of the lacquer craft is not an easy problem.
After many experiments, Mr. Dung has completed the process of experiencing making lacquer products. The blanks with rough patterns are produced in large quantities by Mr. Dung in collaboration with lacquer households in the village for tourists to experience. "Each household will be responsible for a stage in blank production, which will help reduce the cost of the product. Therefore, the cost of experiencing lacquer making is also reduced to the maximum. Tourists can experience, complete a product and take the product home with a cost of only about 300-350,000 VND" - Mr. Dung added.
