Implementing the National Target Program on Socio-Economic Development in Ethnic Minority and Mountainous Areas for the 2021-2030 period, the Central Committee of the Vietnam Farmers' Union has developed a Project to Support the Development of Linked Production in the Value Chain of H'Mong Cow Products in Chiem Hoa District. The project will be implemented for 5 years (2024-2028). 60 households in Xuan Quang and Binh Phu communes have been supported with 120 breeding cows, with an average weight of 198kg/cow or more, for breeding. Households participating in the project were trained in grass planting techniques, cow care and rearing processes; supported with funding for building barns, mixed feed and 100% of output products were purchased. After a period of care, the herd of cows developed well and gave birth to 35 calves.
Leaders of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Farmers' Union and the Farmers' Union of Tuyen Quang province visited the cow herd of households in Xuan Quang commune (Chiem Hoa).
Binh Phu Commune is one of two communes implementing the Project to Support the Development of Production Linked to the Value Chain of H'Mong Cows with a total of 60 breeding cows. Comrade Hoang Van Quang, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Binh Phu Commune, said: The commune has carefully reviewed and selected households that are eligible to receive cows, which must be ethnic minority households, poor households, and near-poor households. Each household receives 2 cows, many of which are drawn to receive cows that already have calves or are pregnant. Up to now, the herd of cows has developed very well and has given birth to 15 more calves.
Last November, Mr. Mac Van Pui's family in Ban Lech village, Binh Phu commune was happy because one of the two cows supported by the Central Committee of the Vietnam Farmers' Union gave birth to twin female calves. Sharing with us, Mr. Pui excitedly said: "I'm very happy. From 2 female cows, after 5 months, they have multiplied to 4. In a few days, the other one will give birth, bringing the total herd to 5 cows. If we continue to develop like this, my family will soon escape poverty."
The family of Ms. Ma Thi Dot, Ngoan B village, Xuan Quang commune is one of 30 households supported by the Central Farmers' Association with 2 H'Mong cows for breeding. The day she received the cows, she was very happy. Every day she went to the field to cut grass to feed the cows. During the raising process, the cows showed unusual signs, so she immediately reported to the veterinary staff and the Commune Farmers' Association for instructions on how to care for them. After 5 months of raising, the 2 cows gave birth to another calf. She said that being supported with a cow for one hectare has many benefits, it not only creates jobs to increase income, but also gives the family an additional source of very good fertilizer for crops.
Comrade Nguyen Thi Vinh An, Vice President of Tuyen Quang Farmers' Association, said that the project not only preserves genetic resources, improves stature, develops the indigenous H'Mong cattle herd, forms concentrated production areas, builds the brand of H'Mong specialty beef, but also helps ethnic minority households participate in the chain to increase product value, increase income, and develop stable and sustainable household economy. This is a very practical and effective project, in line with the development orientation of the province and the Association in the present and the future.
Linking production and consumption of agricultural products is an inevitable trend for any commodity sector in the agricultural sector. The project to support the development of linked production according to the value chain of H'Mong beef products in Chiem Hoa district opens up many opportunities to help increase income for farmer members, enhance the role of farmers' associations at all levels, help breeders, especially ethnic minorities, participate in the chain, form concentrated production areas, and develop a sustainable economy. At the same time, it contributes to building the H'Mong beef brand, a local specialty product that reaches further in the domestic market and towards export.
