Need to develop both international and domestic tourism markets

At the Forum "Vietnam - Destination of MICE Tourism" recently organized by the Vietnam Tourism Association in collaboration with the Institute for Tourism Development Research and the Vietnam MICE Tourism Club, Mr. Vu The Binh - Chairman of the Vietnam Tourism Association said that due to the great and outstanding economic benefits that this type of tourism brings, for many years MICE tourism has been considered a type of tourism, a specialized tourism product of important significance in the Vietnam Tourism Development Strategy.

With many potentials and strengths in tourism resources and technical infrastructure, Vietnam is a destination with great potential for developing MICE tourism.

However, Mr. Vu The Binh said that although many tourism businesses are interested in investing in business, up to now, the development of MICE tourism in Vietnam is still on a small scale, fragmented, lacking system connection in both inter-sectoral and inter-regional aspects, still limited in professionalism, and competitive capacity is still inferior to some countries in the region, so it has not contributed much to the development of Vietnam tourism as expected by the tourism industry.

According to Mr. Vu The Binh, Vietnam's MICE tourism needs to be developed for both the international tourism market (Inbound, Outbound) and the domestic tourism market; on both large, medium and small scales. It is necessary to position the Vietnamese MICE tourism brand, build destinations for each segment of MICE tourism, connect the strengths of tourism businesses, event organizers, and service providers to create an ecosystem for developing MICE tourism in Vietnam in the near future.

Mr. Nguyen Duc Anh - Chairman of MICE Tourism Club said that to develop MICE tourism, it is necessary to understand customers, position customers to position MICE tourism in Vietnam, from there to determine goals, orientations, plans and solutions to develop MICE tourism.

"In the past three years, MICE tourism has developed, thus becoming a trend and "everyone does MICE". However, we must understand the nature of MICE tourism, need to position Vietnam's MICE tourism, to do so we must maximize resources and understand customers. MICE tourism is not easy to do, easy to sell but is the crystallization of all values ​​to create products", said Mr. Nguyen Duc Anh.

Mr. Nguyen Duc Anh said that we must create value, affirm it by value instead of price, for example, we create tourism products that crystallize the value of MICE tourism, very intelligent but very cheap while expensive air tickets will not solve any problem. So the most important thing of MICE tourism is value, but we cannot sell it. Therefore, we must immediately position Vietnam's MICE tourism.

Building a policy mechanism for MICE tourism development

Dr. Nguyen Anh Tuan - Director of the Institute of Tourism Research said that MICE tourism in Vietnam is quite cheap and the service is stable. The demand for MICE tourism of tourists is increasing, especially the number of tourists looking for investment opportunities to develop production and business.

Accumulated from the beginning of the year to August 2024, the total number of international visitors reached nearly 11.4 million, an increase of 45.8% over the same period last year and an increase of 1.0% over the same period in 2019. In particular, the number of MICE tourists grew strongly. In the first quarter of 2024, revenue and the number of MICE tourists to Vietnam increased by 35% over the same period in 2023. This is also the best recovering sector, accounting for about 60 - 70% of current visitors.

However, Dr. Nguyen Anh Tuan said that currently we still lack a systematic and professional MICE tourism development program; building specific products; linking localities and tourism units; international promotion... Lack of large-scale event organization centers.

In addition, human resources serving MICE tourism are limited in both quantity and quality. Vietnam’s MICE tourism promotion to the international market is still weak and fragmented.

Therefore, according to Dr. Nguyen Anh Tuan, it is necessary to build a policy mechanism for developing MICE tourism; invest in synchronous infrastructure, technical facilities, and typical tourism products at tourist centers; promote MICE tourism promotion; invest in developing diverse souvenir products for MICE tourism, with regional characteristics; raise correct awareness and have certain understanding of MICE tourism; strengthen training on behavioral culture and how to support tourists.
