Literature - history - geography, 9.5 points each subject still fails many majors in universities. The social science exam scores in this year's graduation exam skyrocketed, pushing the traditional block C benchmark scores of many schools to unimaginable highs.
Literature pedagogy sets benchmark record
In many fields, candidates who scored 9.6 points in each subject still failed to register. This is most evident in the pedagogical field. The group of pedagogical fields of literature, history, and geography broke all previous benchmark scores of the schools.
In previous years, the benchmark scores for the literature, history, and geography pedagogy groups were higher than those for the natural science pedagogy groups, but not by much, especially for mathematics pedagogy. However, this year the gap has widened.
For example, at Hanoi National University of Education, the two majors of literature and history have a benchmark score of up to 29.3. This means that candidates must achieve 9.767 points to be admitted. This is the highest benchmark score among the universities announced as of the morning of August 18.
Not to mention that for history education, candidates must achieve a score of 19.3 and have their first choice to be admitted. Geography education is lower but still reaches 29.05. History-geography education also has a standard score of 28.83.
Meanwhile, the standard score for the mathematics pedagogy major is only 27.47. The standard score for the physics, chemistry, and biology pedagogy majors ranges from over 26 to over 27 points. Even the "minor" pedagogy majors such as civic education have higher standard scores than these majors.
Even the benchmark scores for these pedagogical majors in many schools are 2 to 2.5 points higher than those for math pedagogy. The gap with chemistry, physics, and biology pedagogical majors is even higher.
The same is true for pedagogical colleges or multidisciplinary universities that train teachers. No major has a higher standard score than pedagogy. No pedagogical major has a higher standard score than literature - history - geography pedagogy.
Carp turns into dragon
The benchmark for the literature - history - geography combination this year has increased in almost all schools. This is not beyond expectations when the number of candidates taking the social science exam has increased, and the exam scores are also much higher than in 2023.
This year, the number of candidates in group C increased by about 20,000 compared to 2023. The average score of 3 subjects in 2023 was 18.97 points, increasing by 1.98 points to 20.95 points in 2024.
If we consider the good and excellent scores, the number of candidates will increase even more. At the score of 24, in 2023 there were 33,459 candidates, in 2024 it doubled.
Meanwhile, the number of candidates achieving excellent scores has increased "horribly". At the score of 27, in 2023 there were 6,041 candidates, in 2024 the number of candidates achieving this score increased 4 times. The number of candidates achieving 28 points increased 6 times in 2023, 29 points increased more than 10 times. The number of candidates from 29 points to 30 points in 2024 increased more than 54 times in 2023.
That is the reason why the admission scores of many majors and schools for literature, history and geography have increased rapidly. Many schools that had average admission scores last year have failed majors with 9 points per subject this year.
For example, at Ho Chi Minh City University of Culture, the benchmark scores for all majors have increased, the highest being up to 8.5 points.
Many candidates said they registered for Ho Chi Minh City University of Culture with the goal of not failing but in the end... they really failed because the standard score increased too much compared to 2023.
Similarly, many majors with a benchmark score of 15 or 16 last year have jumped to 25 points this year. For example, the Vietnamese Studies major at Hanoi National University of Education, which had a benchmark score of 16.4 two years ago, has "gone into a dragon" this year with a benchmark score of 25.07.
At Hanoi University of Culture, this year, 6/18 majors have a benchmark score for group C from 23.85 to under 26.98 points. The remaining 12 majors have a benchmark score of over 27.9 points per subject but still fail. The highest major has a score of 28.9 points. Thus, this year's benchmark score has increased significantly compared to last year.
In 2023, no major of this school will have a standard score of block C of 27 points or higher.
Although not recruiting literature - history - geography, the public relations department of the National Economics University recruits two combinations of literature - history, literature - geography and math. And this year, public relations has a benchmark score of 28.18, the highest in this school, although in 2023 it is behind dozens of other majors of the school.
The benchmark score for block C at many major universities such as Social Sciences and Humanities (Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City National Universities), Academy of Journalism and Propaganda... is also at 9.5 points per subject, but still fails.
