How high is the platelet count dangerous?

A platelet count that is higher than normal (over 450,000 cells/mcL) can pose many health risks and patients need to be treated promptly.

If thrombocytosis is not diagnosed and treated promptly, it can lead to some dangerous complications such as causing blood vessel blockage: Primary thrombocytosis if not treated promptly can cause blood clots to form inside the blood vessels, leading to blood vessel blockage. Blood clots can form inside medium and large blood vessels such as deep veins, cerebral blood vessels, peripheral blood vessels, coronary blood vessels, etc.

Hemorrhage: Hemorrhage is a common complication in patients with primary thrombocytosis. The disease can cause blood clots to form, using up the entire number of platelets in the blood, leading to a platelet deficiency. At that time, the number of platelets is not enough to stop bleeding from wounds in the body, causing massive bleeding.

Cerebral vascular disorders: Abnormally high platelet counts can lead to cerebral vascular disorders, causing the onset of symptoms such as sudden loss of vision, headache, numbness in toes and fingers, etc.

Is thrombocytosis dangerous? Some factors that increase the risk of thrombocytosis include:

The risk of developing essential thrombocythemia may be related to genetic factors such as gene mutations (eg, the JAK2 gene).

The risk of secondary thrombocytosis stems from disorders and diseases in the body, such as blood disorders, cancer, anemia, trauma, infection, kidney failure, damaged or surgically removed spleen...

The goal of treatment for primary thrombocythemia is to control symptoms and reduce platelet counts. To achieve this goal, your doctor may prescribe a treatment regimen that includes:

Use low-dose aspirin: To prevent the risk of blood clots, your doctor may prescribe low-dose aspirin.

Using drugs to help reduce platelet count: Your doctor may prescribe some drugs to help inhibit the production of platelets in the bone marrow such as Anagrelide (Agrilyn®), Hydroxyurea (Siklos®, Droxia®, Hydrea®, Mylocel®…)…

Perform platelet apheresis: Your doctor may recommend that you undergo platelet apheresis to prevent your platelet count from rising too high.

The cause of secondary thrombocytosis originates from factors such as diseases and disorders in the body. Therefore, secondary thrombocytosis will tend to subside on its own after the cause of the disease is effectively treated.

Some notes for patients with thrombocytosis, according to Dr. Nguyen Quoc Thanh, Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, patients should learn more about some related issues. To ensure health and optimize treatment effectiveness, patients with thrombocytosis need to pay attention to the following issues:

Regular health check-ups and follow-up appointments are necessary to properly manage underlying disorders and diseases that can potentially cause thrombocytosis. Patients need to follow the treatment regimen and take medication exactly as prescribed by their doctor.

Maintain a scientific lifestyle by adjusting living habits, exercising regularly, not smoking, avoiding alcohol, not staying up late...

Build a scientific and balanced diet, eat regularly, avoid skipping meals, supplement beneficial foods (fresh fruits, green vegetables, nuts, fatty fish, lean meat, etc.), limit the intake of foods that pose potential risks to health (fast food, canned food, foods containing alcohol, etc.)

Notify your doctor immediately if you experience any unusual symptoms. For thrombocytosis to be diagnosed and treated effectively, everyone should have a general health check-up twice a year.
