6 Vietnamese male students went through the first day of the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) 2023 with a test of 3 questions, lasting 4.5 hours.
This year, the International Mathematical Olympiad took place in Japan from July 2 to 13, with July 8 and 9 being the two official competition days. About 600 students from more than 110 countries and territories participated in this year's competition, the most ever.
The Vietnamese delegation has 6 students, including Pham Viet Hung (High School for Gifted Students of Natural Sciences, Hanoi National University), Nguyen An Thinh and Nguyen Dinh Kien (Tran Phu High School for Gifted Students, Hai Phong), Hoang Tuan Dung (Hanoi National University of Education), Khuc Dinh Toan (Bac Ninh High School for Gifted Students) and Tran Nguyen Thanh Danh (High School for Gifted Students, Ho Chi Minh City National University). They were selected from 32 students with the highest scores in the 2023 National Mathematics Competition. Among them, Pham Viet Hung won the IMO gold medal last year.
The first day of the exam consists of three problems (also known as questions) and takes 4.5 hours to complete. Tomorrow, candidates will take the second test, which is of similar length and duration. Candidates can receive the questions in one of the three languages, but must register in advance and have them approved by the organizing committee.
Below is the 2023 International Mathematical Olympiad exam, day one:
Based on the total score of the two exams, the organizing committee will rank the awards from high to low. The total number of gold, silver, and bronze medals must not exceed 50% of the total number of contestants. Special prizes can be awarded to outstanding contestants with impressive solutions and are not fixed every year.
The International Mathematical Olympiad for high school students has been held annually since 1959. Last year, six Vietnamese students competing in the IMO all won medals, with two students each winning medals. This achievement helped Vietnam rank fourth out of 104 participating countries.
