Not leaving land fallow, switching from ineffective crops to more profitable crops, helping farmers in a commune of Son La province have high income, getting rich on their homeland.
Farmers boldly plant new varieties of plants
The road to the villages of Co Noi commune (Mai Son, Son La) is no longer far, it is paved with flat concrete; along both sides of the road are green orchards. Solidly built houses with green and red roofs are springing up everywhere, the people's lives have now improved, that is proof of the development of a land.
To have the life as it is today, it is the effort of the Party Committee, the government, and the people in promoting the transformation of crop and livestock structure, competing to develop the economy and increase income. Especially, effectively implementing the movement "Farmers compete in production, good business, solidarity to help each other get rich and sustainably reduce poverty". The movement has created a widespread influence, promoting the dynamism and creativity of farmer members, contributing to promoting local socio-economic development.
Introduced by the Farmers' Association of Co Noi Commune, we visited the fruit tree growing model of Mr. Nguyen Dinh Hoan's family, Thong Nhat Sub-area, Co Noi Commune (Mai Son, Son La). His family's pomelo garden is considered one of the largest fruit gardens in this area. To achieve the results he has today, Mr. Hoan has gone through many ups and downs in finding a new economic direction for his family.
Taking us to visit his family's grapefruit garden, Mr. Hoan shared: There was a time when he was attached to growing corn, cassava, etc. However, the increasingly extreme weather due to climate change and the appearance of pests and diseases forced people to use large amounts of inorganic fertilizers and chemicals to ensure productivity, making his family's income unstable. There were times when he considered abandoning the land, not doing agriculture, and switching to another job.
In 2014, with the encouragement of the authorities at all levels and the Farmers' Association to change the crop structure and develop fruit trees on sloping land, his family converted the entire 1 hectare of hilly land to grow nearly 1,000 trees.
Thanks to flexibility in choosing suitable plant varieties and good care, applying science and technology to cultivation, Mr. Hoan's grapefruit garden always produces full branches of fruit, good quality, ensuring cleanliness, not overusing chemicals and pesticides, so it is trusted by consumers to buy at high prices, increasing economic income for the family.
"Every year, my grapefruit garden bears fruit. This year, thanks to good care and favorable weather, my grapefruit garden has large, delicious fruits that traders drive trucks to the garden to buy. Grapefruits are harvested from autumn to Tet, when prices are high at 15,000 - 20,000 VND/fruit. On average, I earn nearly 500 million VND per year from selling Dien grapefruit," said Mr. Hoan.
In a year from growing fruit trees, farmers can pocket half a billion dong, with Mr. Hoan's good and effective methods, it even more urges us to want to explore this land.
After saying goodbye to Mr. Hoan, we returned to Co Noi village, the central village of Co Noi commune (Mai Son, Son La). Visiting the fields of the village, everywhere we saw the bright smiles of farmers during the strawberry harvest. We visited a strawberry garden of a farmer's family right next to the smooth concrete road in the field.
This strawberry garden is about 6,000 square meters wide, with rows of green strawberries, each tree bearing fruit, some strawberries as big as drinking cups, people often call this type "VIP goods". Ms. Lo Linh Giang, Co Noi village, Co Noi commune (Mai Son, Son La), the garden owner, shared: In previous years, her family's life was still difficult, depending on corn and cassava, the income was not much. Implementing the policy of the province and district on converting ineffective crop structure to planting new varieties for higher economic efficiency.
When she learned about strawberries, her family converted the entire area of over 6,000 square meters of ineffective corn land to strawberry farming. Currently, her family's strawberry area has begun to yield a daily harvest of 25-30 kg. With the current selling price ranging from 120,000 - 180,000 VND/kg, her family earns nearly 5 million VND per day, which is only at the beginning of the season, with low output. During the main season, her family's income is even higher.
"Growing strawberries is much harder than growing other plants, and requires a lot of care. In particular, growers must understand the habits of this plant variety so that the plant can grow and produce flowers and fruits. However, in return, growing strawberries is many times more economically efficient than other plants, and one crop can last up to 3 months," said Ms. Giang.
Spreading power from the movement of good farmers and businessmen
In Co Noi land, not only Mr. Hoan's family and Ms. Giang's family have high income from promoting household economic development, but the movement "Farmers compete in production, good business, unite to help each other get rich and sustainably reduce poverty" has spread everywhere.
Talking to reporters, Mr. Lo Van Tien, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Co Noi Commune (Mai Son, Son La) said: In recent years, the movement of farmers competing in good production and business has contributed to promoting resources for agricultural and rural development; farmer members have exploited the potential of land, labor and family capital, and more and more typical advanced examples have appeared, contributing to promoting agricultural production to develop in the direction of increasing value and efficiency.
