Orange and grapefruit growers in Bac Giang province are in the midst of the Tet sales season. This year, oranges and grapefruits are selling well and at good prices, earning many gardeners in Bac Giang billions of dong.
Visiting Mr. Nguyen Van Huu's grapefruit garden in Thanh Hai ward (Chu town) at the end of the year is also the time when his family is busy harvesting grapefruit. During this time, his family's grapefruit garden is bustling every day, partly because traders come to the garden to buy, partly because many tourists come to visit, experience, and take photos.
Mr. Huu said that his grapefruit garden is about 10 hectares wide. This year, he expects to harvest more than 200,000 tons of grapefruit. Currently, grapefruit consumption is favorable. He sells green-skin grapefruit for 45,000 VND/kg, and Dien grapefruit for 30,000 VND/fruit. The selling price is 5,000 - 10,000 VND higher than last year.
He has sold more than 100,000 tons of grapefruit. Mr. Huu estimates total revenue of about 6 - 7 billion VND from grapefruit, minus expenses, profit of about 2 billion VND.
Mr. Huu added that due to the impact of storm No. 3, his family's grapefruit output decreased compared to last year. Many local grapefruit gardens were also damaged by storms. However, this year, the consumption of oranges and grapefruits is favorable, especially grapefruit garden tourism attracts many visitors. At this time, there are days when his grapefruit garden welcomes nearly 1,000 visitors. Many tourists buy grapefruit right in the garden.
We visited the fruit-laden orange garden of Mr. Trinh Su Hoa in Kien Lao commune, Chu town (Bac Giang) located on a hillside stretching along a winding road. Mr. Hoa hurriedly introduced visitors to the orange garden.
Mr. Hoa said that in 2012, he and his wife started to go to Bang Cong village, Kien Lao commune to buy 5 hectares of hilly land to grow oranges. He planted 2,000 Duong Canh orange trees and 2,000 Vinh orange trees. Two years later, his orange garden began to be harvested.
This year, he estimates to harvest more than 200,000 tons of oranges. He has sold 30,000 tons of oranges. The selling price of Vinh oranges at the garden is from 20,000 - 25,000 VND/kg, and Canh oranges are from 40,000 - 50,000 VND/kg.
“Oranges are selling very well. I expect to earn about 7-8 billion VND, after deducting expenses, the profit is about 3 billion VND. In addition, my orange garden is also a tourist destination, welcoming hundreds of visitors per day during this time,” said Mr. Hoa.
The old Luc Ngan district (now separated into Chu town and Luc Ngan district) is the “capital” of orange and grapefruit growing in Bac Giang province. Currently, green-skin grapefruit in Luc Ngan district and Chu town has been harvested, with an output of 3,500 tons.
Hoang grapefruit, Dao Duong grapefruit, and Que Duong grapefruit have entered harvest, with an output of 7,600 tons of all kinds, with prices ranging from 10,000-15,000 VND/fruit.
The yellow-heart orange has also entered the harvest season, the early season price is 10,000 VND/kg higher than last year. Luc Ngan sweet orange is entering the early harvest season, the yield is higher than in 2023 because people have converted to grafting on grapefruit rootstocks with a fairly large area.
According to statistics from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Luc Ngan district and Chu town, the area of orange and grapefruit cultivation in Luc Ngan district and Chu town is over 4,000 hectares. Due to the impact of storm No. 3, orange and grapefruit output decreased by 40%. The output of orange and grapefruit trees after the storm is estimated at over 33,000 tons.
However, the average selling price is 5,000 - 10,000 VND/kg higher than in 2023. The economic value of oranges and grapefruits in 2024 is estimated at 1,000 billion VND, equivalent to the same period last year.
