Auction of rare paintings by famous painter Tran Van Can

The work "'Reverie'' (Dream) by artist Tran Van Can was hammered by Aguttes for 369,060 euros (10.1 billion VND) on November 5.

The painting fetched the highest price at the auction. Asian Artists - Vietnamese Modern Art . The work was created by the artist in 1936, signed and dated in the upper right corner, depicting a woman with a gentle appearance, her left hand resting lightly on her chin, her gaze distant.

Art researcher Ngo Kim Khoi said the painting has a clear origin and has a label on the back. The 1937 Paris International Exhibition is a rare work by Tran Van Can on the market. Unlike the famous painters Nguyen Gia Tri, To Ngoc Van, Nguyen Tuong Lan, belonging to the Tri - Van - Lan - Can quartet, there is very little information about the auction of his works on the international market.

Painter Tran Van Can (1910-1994) was from Tu Son, Bac Ninh but was born in Kien An, Hai Phong. He graduated as valedictorian of the seventh class (1931-1936) of the Indochina College of Fine Arts.

As a student, the artist made great contributions to the research and improvement of lacquer painting techniques. He was also successful in silk, with many outstanding works, such as My mother (1993), Go to work in the field (1935), Two girls in front of the screen (1944). With oil paints, the artist left his mark through bright paintings. Among them, Thuy - His portrait of his niece - is recognized as national treasure 2013. The artist was awarded the Ho Chi Minh Prize for Literature and Arts in 1996, received the first-class Independence Medal and many professional awards.

Also at Aguttes' auction on November 5, the work In the mountains (In the mountains) by the artist Mai Trung Thu had the second highest sale price. The artist painted the painting in 1959, using ink and color on silk. The painting depicts one of the artist's favorite themes, depicting the affection between generations of a family.
