In a post at 6:45 a.m. on June 6 (local time, 10:45 a.m. Hanoi time), the Ukrainian-appointed head of Kherson province Oleksandr Prokudin said that evacuation work had begun in areas near Kakhovka. Local and central officials are working to ensure the safety of residents.
“The river level will reach the warning level within five hours,” Mr Prokudin said.
TASS news agency quoted emergency services as saying that about 80 settlements in the region could be affected by the incident.
Ukraine blamed Russia for the dam collapse. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held an emergency meeting on the incident.
Meanwhile, Russian official Vladimir Leonte in the town of Nova Kakhovka said that the Kakhovka dam was damaged by a series of Ukrainian attacks and that it would be difficult to repair the structure.
TASS quoted an unnamed emergency source as saying that the Kakhovka dam was destroyed by a missile launched from the Olkha launcher.
Responding to the incident, on the same day, British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly, who was visiting Ukraine, blamed Russia's special military campaign, and commented, "it is too early to make any meaningful detailed assessment".
