Born in 1825 in My Phu village, Xuan Vinh commune (now My Phu 1 village, An Hiep commune, Tuy An district) in a family with a tradition of Confucianism and patriotism, Le Thanh Phuong passed the bachelor's exam at the age of 30 and opened a school in his hometown. In 1885, responding to King Ham Nghi's Can Vuong Proclamation, patriot Le Thanh Phuong and a number of patriotic scholars and writers in Phu Yen rose up to gather the insurgent army and raise the flag of uprising against the invading French colonialists.
On February 11, 1887, on his way back to Tuy Hoa to prepare for a general counterattack to retake the delta, Le Thanh Phuong fell into the hands of the enemy. Although the French colonialists used all means of enticement, bribery, and torture, they could not shake his iron will. Le Thanh Phuong stood firm before the enemy with the immortal saying: "Ninh tho tu bat ninh tho nhuc" (I would rather die than live in humiliation).
