On the morning of October 16, the 23rd meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) opened in Islamabad, Pakistan.

The meeting was attended by senior leaders from SCO member states, including Russia, China, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. The Indian Foreign Minister and the Iranian Industry and Trade Minister were also present at the event.
This is an important event marking Pakistan's hosting role in the SCO. In his opening speech, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed his pride in his country hosting the Summit.
Stressing the importance of cooperation among SCO member states, as well as the role of the SCO as an important platform for building a prosperous, stable and secure future for the peoples of member states, the leader also called for “prosperity through solidarity”.
Prime Minister Sharif also affirmed Pakistan's commitment to promoting regional peace and stability, enhancing connectivity and socio-economic development.
On October 15, Pakistani Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said that the leaders will discuss urgent issues such as climate, connectivity and regional security, economy, and poverty eradication at the 2024 SCO Summit, and draft and issue a consensus statement at the end of the summit.
The spokesperson emphasized that as the second largest forum in the world, the SCO Summit is a "golden opportunity" for member countries to agree to resolve regional issues.
Also on October 15, Pakistani Prime Minister Sharif held separate meetings with leaders of many SCO member countries to exchange ideas to promote bilateral relations and strengthen this intergovernmental international organization.
