Defendant sentenced to 9 years in prison for using knife to slash creditor

On March 31, the People's Court of Bac Lieu province brought the murder case to the first instance trial of the defendant Thai Phuong Phu (29 years old, residing in Hamlet 2, Ho Phong Ward, Gia Rai Town). Defendant Phu used a meat cleaver to slash the creditor to death because he came to the house to collect the debt and fought with the defendant's family.

According to the indictment, at about 10:30 p.m. on July 14, 2023, Mr. LTA (43 years old, residing in Hamlet 2, Ho Phong Ward, Gia Rai Town) met Thai Phuong Phu to collect debt, then argued and fought with Phu, but was stopped by everyone.

LTA continued to go home to get a case of glass beer bottles and a metal bar to the restaurant of defendant Phu's mother-in-law, used the beer bottles to throw at the restaurant, breaking the glass cabinet and some other objects, then left. Defendant Phu's mother-in-law and a relative went to LTA's house, asked why he came to the house to cause trouble, at the same time, defendant Phu heard that LTA came to the restaurant to cause trouble, so he brought a meat cleaver (in the restaurant) and ran to LTA's house. Here, the two sides continued to fight, defendant Phu grabbed a knife and rushed in to slash the victim in the head, the others threw beer bottles back and forth until they were stopped. LTA was taken to Can Tho Central General Hospital for emergency treatment. According to the injury assessment conclusion of the Bac Lieu Provincial Forensic Center, the body injury rate at the time of LTA's assessment was 54%. The conclusion of the additional assessment of bodily injuries on living people by the Provincial Forensic Center shows that, for LTA's injuries, if not treated promptly, it could lead to death.

At the end of the first instance trial, the People’s Court of Bac Lieu province sentenced the defendant Thai Phuong Phu to 9 years in prison for “Murder”. In addition to the prison sentence, the panel of judges also ordered the defendant to compensate the victim more than 92 million VND.
