Ho Chi Minh City University of Transport: those with IELTS will be exempted from studying English at the corresponding level

After many parents and students of Ho Chi Minh City University of Transport were upset that students with international language certificates such as IELTS were still forced to take exams and pay for English classes at the school, the school adjusted this regulation.

No English UTH certificate

On the afternoon of December 11, speaking with Tuoi Tre Online , Mr. Nguyen Anh Tuan - Vice Principal of Ho Chi Minh City University of Transport - said: "With the spirit of seeking knowledge, after receiving information from Tuoi Tre newspaper, the school's Science and Training Council has just met and agreed to adjust the regulations on exemption from English subjects. Students with IELTS certificates will be exempted according to their English proficiency."

At the same time, Mr. Tuan affirmed that in the certificate system of Ho Chi Minh City University of Transport, there is no English UTH certificate.

The school has a regular English language bachelor's program, which has been assessed by the Ministry of Education and Training and is allowed to enroll students from 2022.

"The supplementary English program for students of non-English majors is built on the foundation of a standard English training system that has been assessed, evaluated and approved by the school's Scientific and Training Council (including experts, scientists and businesses in the field of transportation) to suit the learning target," Mr. Tuan added.

"Online learning is more common because the school is repairing and upgrading the lecture halls"

Regarding students' feedback that UTH English learning at the school is mainly online and the content of grammar lessons, Mr. Tuan explained that recently the school has implemented a plan to repair facilities (upgrade lecture halls, prevent flooding...) to ensure safety for students, so only 1/3 of the classrooms can be used.

Therefore, from July 2024 to November 11, 2024, the school will temporarily apply a combination of online and in-person learning.

On the other hand, with the strength of good infrastructure and being a partner of Google, Microsoft along with a team of good lecturers, the school boldly changes in the digital age.

The school ensures that the ratio of online and in-person learning complies with regulations, bringing balance and efficiency to the learning process.

Since November 11, the newly upgraded lecture hall system has been put into use at over 80% capacity, so all classes are currently conducting in-person learning.

"Students will be tested on their foreign language ability upon admission to be placed in the appropriate level and then placed in classes according to their respective abilities. The levels are designed from basic to advanced, obviously including basic grammar.

Students of the class of 2023 have been assessed for their abilities and classified into different levels, so there will be groups that will have to learn from the most basic level. Therefore, the information they reflect is not true to nature," said Mr. Tuan.

Students who have submitted IELTS certificates will be exempted from English levels corresponding to their abilities.

Answering the question of whether the school has surveyed the number of students with international language certificates, and that the school has previously announced that students must submit foreign language certificates (?), Mr. Tuan said that the school's enrollment plan clearly states that students are allowed to be admitted directly when they have an English certificate of IELTS 6.0, TOEFL iBT60, TOEFL ITP 530, TOEIC 600, level 4 according to the foreign language proficiency framework for Vietnam.

Therefore, students who have submitted their certificates at that time will be exempted from the English levels corresponding to their abilities. The number of students admitted directly by English method is 161 students.

"However, students who already have a foreign language certificate for sensitive reasons can send it through reporters of newspapers and radio stations - an official and important connection channel. The school will coordinate to best support the learner.

The school does not have any regulations regarding the refusal of international English certificates. Before starting to study English levels at the school, students need to submit international certificates so that the school's Scientific and Training Council can consider exemption from studying the corresponding English level.

The school's training regulations also have regulations on this issue," Mr. Tuan added.
