Cuba and Bolivia cooperate to promote safe migration, for the benefit of expatriates

On August 19, Cuba and Bolivia concluded the third round of bilateral negotiations on migration and consular issues to promote the protection of migrants' rights.

The event took place in the Bolivian city of Santa Cruz de la Sierra.

Mr. Ernesto Soberón, Director General of the Department of Consular Affairs and Cubans Abroad, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cuba, led the delegation to the round of negotiations. Bolivia was represented by Ms. Eva Chuquimia, Undersecretary of Institutional Management and Consular Activities of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The joint communique issued after the talks stated that the aim of the meeting was to enhance dialogue to promote actions in the interests of the Cuban and Bolivian diaspora. The two delegations affirmed their commitment to promoting safe migration, enabling integration and protecting the rights of migrants. They also highlighted the need to address the multidimensional challenges of forced migration from a cooperative and humanitarian perspective.

Cuba and Bolivia stressed their desire to maintain and strengthen relevant bilateral mechanisms. They reviewed the current situation of migration flows and the results of joint actions to prevent irregular migration; they discussed the importance of ensuring regular, orderly and safe journeys.

On the sidelines of the talks, Mr. Soberón chaired an online conference on Cuba's Migration Policy and met with compatriots residing in the city of Santa Cruz de la Sierra, capital of Santa Cruz province.

The second round of negotiations on migration between Cuba and Bolivia took place on September 15, 2022 in the Cuban capital Havana.
