'Winter window' closes in La Liga

WAVE YOUR HAND OVER YOUR FOREHEAD

In principle, the "winter window" is never as busy as the "summer window". But in terms of expertise, the mid-season transfer period in Europe is very important because most big teams have their own weaknesses, which are revealed after half a season, and almost every team needs to strengthen its force to fill the gaps in the squad.

Barcelona FC did not spend a penny in the winter transfer window

This season, teams in Spain's La Liga have been surprisingly frugal. La Liga spent... -20 million euros in the mid-season transfer window, meaning they sold more than they bought! The biggest deal was just 13 million euros (Real Betis bought Cucho Hernandez). Both giants Real Madrid and Barcelona didn't spend a penny.

Observers immediately recalled: Barcelona was the team that spent 160 million euros to buy Philippe Coutinho in the "winter window" of 2018, just a few months after they bought Ousmane Dembele for 150 million euros. Now even registering existing players is a big problem for Barcelona! Registering means paying the full salary, not to mention whether the financial fair play law allows it or not. Barcelona fans are extremely tired when the information keeps changing: sometimes the club can use Dani Olmo and Pau Victor, sometimes not.

Real Madrid have also been silent, even though Eder Militao, Dani Carvajal, Antonio Rudiger, David Alaba are all injured. The team really wants Trent Alexander-Arnold, but will have to wait until the summer to sign him... for free, as they did with Kylian Mbappe. The most recent financial statistics (December 31, 2023) show that Real only has 35 million euros left in cash. Buying more than that would risk breaking the law.

PREMIER LEAGUE IS STILL THE RICHEST

In the English second division, teams like Luton Town and Sheffield United have surpassed their previous spending limit (€10 million). Small club Como, who are 15th in Serie A, have spent €48 million on seven new players, not counting temporary loans. At RB Leipzig, Jurgen Klopp’s first spending spree as global football director for the Red Bull Group was €55 million.

It's no surprise that the Premier League tops the 2025 winter window in terms of net spending (i.e., the cost of buying and selling players) at €320.5 million. No other league in Europe's top five leagues is even in the top three for mid-season spending. Saudi Arabia's Pro League is second (€141.73 million), while England's Championship, the second tier of football, is third (€43.7 million). Italy's Serie A (€33.5 million) and Germany's Bundesliga (€31.45 million) are next. Either way, they're spending money. La Liga and France's Ligue 1 are both selling more than they're buying.

In the ranking of clubs, Man.City leads in terms of spending power (218 million euros). Two Arab clubs, Al-Nassr and Al-Ahli, appear in the top 5, along with PSG and Rennes of France. Serie A also has 2 representatives (Milan and Como) in the top 10, along with Leipzig (Germany), Brighton and Wolverhampton (England).
