On social network X , CEO Sam Altman said ChatGPT had just added one million users in just one hour. The information was shared after the app updated the feature to generate images directly from the GPT-4o model.

“The launch of ChatGPT 26 months ago was one of the craziest ‘explosive’ moments I’ve ever seen, and we hit a million users in 5 days. Now we’ve added a million users in the last hour,” Altman wrote.

Previously, OpenAI announced the “Images in ChatGPT” feature, which allows for live image generation through the GPT-4o model.

OpenAI initially planned to release the feature to all users, but traffic was so high that the company limited free accounts to three uses per day.

On X , Altman even wrote “Our GPU is melting,” referring to the system overload caused by too many people accessing the image generator. It wasn’t until early April 1 that OpenAI’s CEO announced that the tool would be re-released to all users for free.

The overload caused ChatGPT and Sora to have errors when creating new accounts. According to OpenAI’s website, the problem started on March 30 and was fixed on April 1.

ChatGPT’s user base has continued to grow over time, with OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap saying in February that the tool had reached 400 million weekly users.

“We are proud to serve 5% of the world’s population every week,” Lightcap wrote on X. That’s double the number from August 2024 (200 million), and four times the number from November 2023.

Despite its popularity, ChatGPT's image-generating feature has been controversial in the creative community, with many accusing OpenAI of using their work to train models without permission or compensation.

According to Engadget , one of the prominent examples is an image inspired by the style of Studio Ghibli, a famous Japanese animation studio.

Even Altman used Studio Ghibli-inspired photos as his avatar on X , while many abused the style to create violent or provocative content.

Altman remains a prominent figure at OpenAI. He was unexpectedly removed from the company’s board of directors in November 2023. However, protests from employees and investors helped Altman return within days.

“I love you guys. Today’s experience has been strange in many ways, quite surprisingly, like giving a eulogy while you’re still alive,” Altman said in November 2023.

Altman has recently been embroiled in a legal battle with OpenAI co-founder Elon Musk, with the two at odds over OpenAI’s decision to no longer operate as a non-profit, among other issues.
