Golden opportunity to attract American tourist market

Vietnam has great potential to attract the American tourist market thanks to its beautiful natural landscapes, rich historical and cultural heritage and unique cuisine.

The US is one of the key markets for Vietnamese tourism, ranking 5th among the largest markets sending visitors to Vietnam. American visitors also have high spending levels and long stays.

The period 2015-2019 witnessed a continuous growth in the number of American visitors to Vietnam. In 2015, the tourism industry welcomed 491 thousand American visitors and by 2019 this number was 746 thousand visitors, an increase of 1.5 times. The average growth rate in the period 2015-2019 reached 11%/year.

After the Covid-19 pandemic, the US tourist market recovered quickly with 717 thousand arrivals in 2023, recovering about 96% compared to 2019. In the first 8 months of 2024, Vietnam welcomed 529 thousand US visitors, an increase of 8% over the same period in 2023 and 1.7% higher than before the pandemic.

In general, American visitors to Vietnam spend a lot of money and stay for a long time. The results of the survey of information on international tourists to Vietnam in 2019 by the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism showed that the average spending per American visitor was 1,570.8 USD, the average stay was 12 days, much higher than the average of international visitors to Vietnam (spending 1,074 USD, staying 8.1 days).

Vietnam has great potential to attract the American tourist market thanks to its beautiful natural landscapes, rich cultural and historical heritage and unique cuisine. In particular, famous landmarks of Vietnam have been chosen as filming locations for a number of American films, including the blockbuster “Kong: Skull Island” with spectacular scenes in Ha Long Bay, Quang Binh, Ninh Binh. This is a great opportunity for the image of Vietnam to approach the American market as well as spread to the whole world through the perspective of cinema.

From September 23-25, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism will organize the Vietnam Tourism - Cinema Promotion Program in San Francisco and Los Angeles, California, USA with the theme "Vietnam - New destination of world cinema".

This is a highlight in the 2024 promotion plan of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. Through the program, it aims to introduce and promote tourist destinations, potential filming locations, attract Hollywood film studios to Vietnam to film films with great appeal, capable of creating international media effects, promote promotion and attract tourists to Vietnam.

The potential for growth in tourist exchange between Vietnam and the US in the coming time is huge as the two countries officially upgraded their diplomatic relations to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in September last year, many US businesses have also invested in the tourism sector in Vietnam, and Vietnam Airlines has opened a direct flight connecting the two countries.

This Vietnam Tourism - Cinema Promotion Program is expected to create a breakthrough in exchanges and cooperation with US partners to promote tourism through cinema, promote the image and brand of Vietnam in the US and around the world.
