On September 9 and 10, the G20 Summit will take place in New Delhi, India. Security in New Delhi has been tightened to ensure the safety of the conference.
About 130,000 security personnel were mobilized to ensure the safety of the conference. |
Strict control
According to The Times of India, from 5am on September 8 to midnight on September 10, the entire New Delhi is considered a “controlled zone”. About 130,000 security personnel have been deployed. The Bharat Mandapam Convention Center (where the conference is held) and the hotels where world leaders are staying will be sealed off.
Traffic control in and around New Delhi from September 7 to 10 will be strictly enforced. The New Delhi Police Department has stopped all vehicles carrying goods from border areas into the capital from 9pm on September 7, except for vehicles carrying essential goods such as milk, vegetables, fruits, medicines, etc. Meanwhile, schools, banks, businesses and all government agencies will be closed. Even food delivery and e-commerce companies are not allowed to operate in areas adjacent to the conference venue.
According to DW, more than 1,000 flights will be canceled or have to adjust flight times, and nearly 300 trains to New Delhi are likely to be affected. From midnight on September 8, some routes in the capital will be restricted to ensure smooth traffic during the two days of the event...
Last chance
More than 30 heads of state and senior leaders from the European Union, guests and 14 heads of international organizations gathered in New Delhi. According to observers, the agenda at this conference is likely to focus on issues such as: cryptocurrency regulation, reform of the multilateral development bank, promoting the development of public digital infrastructure, financing to combat climate change, building common debt relief frameworks for struggling countries and improving global value chains.
Some say the conflict in Ukraine and global food and energy insecurity could affect the summit’s joint communique. It is possible that the summit in New Delhi could end with just a chairman’s summary, which would acknowledge and list the issues discussed. This view comes amid a lack of consensus on a number of issues due to the absence of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping at this year’s summit.
Mr. Michael Kugelman, Director of the South Asia Research Institute at the Wilson Center (USA), said that the G20 is going through a very difficult geopolitical time.
“In any situation, when the US and its allies disagree with Russia and China, things will become very complicated,” Mr. Kugelman said.
The conflict in Ukraine, now in its second year, shows that the world is truly divided, Kugelman said. These challenges actually complicated Indonesia’s G20 presidency last year, and the situation has not improved. Kugelman said the New Delhi summit is an opportunity for the G20 to show that it can do something effective.
