Phuong Dong A Primary School is located on a hill in Cua Ngan area, which is a disadvantaged area of Phuong Dong ward. There was a time when Cua Ngan area had to actively encourage children to go to school. Currently, the education of children has been paid more attention by families in Cua Ngan, however, the culture of reading, especially reading books for children in primary school, including children just entering grade 1, seems quite strange.
Implementing the direction on strengthening reading culture, improving the quality of education in schools and thoroughly grasping the topic "Studying and following Ho Chi Minh's ideology, morality and style on building Vietnamese culture and people, especially culture in the Party and revolutionary morality in the new situation" of Phuong Dong A Primary School, from September 2023, teacher Nguyen Thi Hoa registered the model "Training reading habits for first-grade students through reading sessions at the library, contributing to honoring reading culture and improving the quality of the 2018 general education program".
Talking about this model, teacher Nguyen Thi Hoa said: In the age of information technology and the explosion of media, reading (reading culture) is being overwhelmed by other types of listening and viewing. Entertainment channels, along with electronic devices and social networks like Facebook, YouTube... with their own advantages, have somewhat taken over children's attention. Children's fascination with phones, computers... leads to the downside of making it difficult for them to control their emotions, easily get angry, less interested in the world around them, significantly affecting their formation and development both mentally and physically. Some students who read books tend to read faster, thinner books and "skimming", reading books on the Internet via mobile phones...
Meanwhile, as we all understand, reading not only helps to expand knowledge, but books also help to perfect oneself and nourish each person's soul. Therefore, I always think about how to make my students love books and enjoy reading. And I choose the school library for students to read books, because the library of Phuong Dong A Primary School has 1,338 titles corresponding to 4,174 books, with diversity in both learning space and reading methods, meeting the goal of not only focusing on teaching reading skills, but also forming and developing reading habits for students.
Identifying the target audience as first graders, the age group just entering school, so practicing reading will have certain difficulties, teacher Nguyen Thi Hoa tried to help students understand why they have to read books. Teacher Hoa collected stories, examples of love of reading and the benefits of reading to tell students. Along with that, teacher Hoa also showed students videos introducing books by topic, stimulating them to find books to read, answering their curiosity and eagerness to know how the content of the introduced story unfolds. At the same time, she introduced the school library in general through pictures, covering the space, number of books, seating positions and how to find books according to the color code; instructed students on how to borrow books home, preserve books and return books according to regulations.
At each time, teacher Hoa flexibly chooses appropriate reading forms, such as reading aloud together, reading together, reading in pairs, reading individually... Teacher Nguyen Thi Hoa said: If reading aloud together helps students feel comfortable and have a spirit of teamwork, then reading individually helps them contemplate the story more carefully, have their own personal views, from which they boldly express their opinions, share, express themselves in front of the class, discuss their thoughts and feelings about the characters, and the lessons they learn for themselves from the story in the book.
With the characteristics of flexibility and openness in learning and reading practice, the model "Training reading habits for first graders through reading sessions at the library, contributing to honoring reading culture and improving the quality of the 2018 general education program" by teacher Nguyen Thi Hoa has contributed to forming students' love of reading, gradually transforming reading into their living needs, contributing to promoting students' abilities and qualities to meet the requirements of the 2018 general education program.
Through the survey, the percentage of students who love reading and have a habit of reading regularly in the first semester increased from 65-70% to 100% when students entered the second semester. The model "Training reading habits for first graders through reading sessions at the library, contributing to honoring the reading culture and improving the quality of the 2018 general education program" by teacher Nguyen Thi Hoa also spread effectively in raising the reading awareness of teachers, students and parents of Phuong Dong A Primary School.
