2023 is a special year for Pham Quang Huy as he makes history in Vietnamese sports with the first gold medal for the country at the 19th ASIAD and marks the first time a Vietnamese shooter has successfully changed the color of his medal at the Asian Games. A great achievement for a young man whose parents are both famous shooters (former player Pham Cao Son won 11 SEA Games gold medals, Dang Thi Hang is also a professional shooter) and is mentored by Korean expert Park Chung-gun and Olympic record holder Hoang Xuan Vinh.

It was surprising that Quang Huy was "kicked" out of the national team a few years ago because of neglecting training. He said: "At that time, at the end of 2019, I was still very impulsive, saying whatever I thought, doing whatever I wanted without thinking carefully. Being "invited" out of the national team was a shock but helped me mature. Especially since I have a girlfriend, she advised me more, so I have become more "restrained", thinking over and over again before saying or doing anything, considering and changing."

One day in April 2021, when Facebook suddenly suggested a "you may know" account of a pretty girl, with a delicate face and intelligent eyes. Her beauty immediately attracted the attention of the young athlete. Huy immediately added her as a friend, finding a random excuse to ask her about her. Nguyen Tran Thao Trang was then a second-year student at the Academy of Finance. The more they talked, the more he felt attracted by the intelligence and gentleness of the girl born in 2002. After

After a month of getting to know each other, Huy decided to meet Trang. It was a weekend, coincidentally both of them were returning from home to the capital Hanoi. Knowing that his friend would be carrying a lot of stuff from her hometown, the gallant young gunner rode his motorbike from Hai Phong to the train station and picked Trang up to go to the dormitory. That day, Huy carried her cumbersome belongings up the stairs and "swallowed" 5 floors, then took her to the movies. That same day, he mustered up all his courage to propose, and was happy when he received a tacit signal of consent.

Quang Huy recounted: "I had no idea that Thao Trang had already recognized me, when the bus carrying her stopped at a red light, coincidentally I was also coming to pick her up on my motorbike. After asking me to carry her things to the dormitory, Trang said she was very impressed by the guy wearing a bright red moving shirt, with a red flag with a yellow star printed on his chest, standing out among the crowd of cars. That image created a strong emotion, making her feel closer. I was very surprised to hear that, like a predestined fate. She was always very lovely and studied very well."

Wait for her to graduate, we will live together

The sweet love of Quang Huy and Thao Trang over the past few years cannot be without the intense longing, whenever he is busy with long training and competitions. On weekends when they are together, Huy always tries to make up for his lover by being attentive, taking her to familiar places to eat, associated with many memories.

Quang Huy recalls: "There were a few times when I went to pick Trang up to go out or her classmates teased me about how Trang had such a cool boyfriend, I could only laugh. At that time, I only had a gold medal in the 50m pistol team and a silver medal in the 25m standard pistol at the Southeast Asian tournament. I thought that if I hadn't been to Asia, I wouldn't be considered cool. That motivated me to try harder, to focus more on improving my performance, and to adjust my mentality to be more stable. Luckily, I always received sincere support from Trang. Many times, we confided in each other, we were sad and missed each other very much, wanted to meet but had to give up, had to make an appointment when we achieved results, and used the bonus money to celebrate as motivation. There were also times when I went to compete, practiced hard and missed the time, I was busy playing on my phone and didn't pay attention, but Trang reminded me to focus. In a gentle and subtle way, she helped me improve myself."

The love between Huy and Trang was further nurtured after the girl returned to Hai Phong twice and received support and love from Huy's parents. The two families also promised to wait for Trang to graduate and have a stable job before moving forward with the story of the young couple "coming home together".

Quang Huy shared: "This year I am very happy to win the ASIAD gold medal that I have always dreamed of as a gift for my parents and Trang. But I know that achieving success is difficult, staying at the top is even more difficult. I still have many milestones to reach, many challenges to overcome, including the top goal of winning a ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympics. I told my parents that I want to be like coach Hoang Xuan Vinh and win an Olympic medal. To do that, I will have to work harder to practice and improve my performance. I am very confident and have strong motivation, because I know that behind me there will always be the support of my family, the coaching staff and especially Trang's great love."
