The upcoming visit of Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Mikhail Mishustin to Vietnam is a strong step forward in seeking effective economic cooperation between the two countries.
This is the opinion of Ms. Ekaterina Koldunova, Associate Professor of Oriental Studies, Director of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Center at the Moscow State University of International Relations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, in a recent interview with a reporter of the Vietnam News Agency in Moscow.
Assessing the results of cooperation between Vietnam and the Russian Federation in recent years, Associate Professor Koldunova said that the two countries have always made constant efforts to bring trade turnover back to the level before 2022 and have achieved this goal by the end of 2024.
She said Vietnam and the Russian Federation are seeking new opportunities in the fields of finance, economics and logistics to promote bilateral trade.
Several new logistics routes have been formed, connecting Russia's Far East with Vietnam, creating conditions for Russian businesses to actively participate in trade activities.
Regarding investment cooperation, Ms. Koldunova said that Vietnamese companies and enterprises such as TH True Milk still maintain stable operations in Russia, while the energy sector continues to witness many joint investment and production cooperation projects being implemented.
Regarding the potential for cooperation between Vietnam and Russia, Associate Professor Koldunova said that agriculture and industrial agriculture are areas of interest to both sides.
Vietnamese products are gradually filling the void left by the withdrawal of Western companies from the Russian market. In addition, energy continues to be a traditional area of cooperation between the two countries.
Ms. Koldunova also emphasized that Vietnam's rapid economic growth after the COVID-19 pandemic has created a huge demand for energy.
Russian companies traditionally invest in natural resource exploitation in Vietnam, but are also interested in new forms of cooperation, co-production and possibly transferring some production processes to Vietnam, similar to US and Chinese companies.
She suggested that Vietnam pay attention to the areas that Western companies left in the Russian market, especially in the creative economy, light industry, and fashion industry, which are very developed industries in Vietnam.
Regarding the agenda of Prime Minister Mishustin's visit to Vietnam, Ms. Koldunova said that it is necessary to evaluate based on the results of the visit, when there are specific agreements.
She expressed her belief that the recent decision of the Vietnamese National Assembly to restart the Ninh Thuan nuclear power project reflects the commitment of both Vietnam and Russia to achieving carbon neutrality and moving towards a green economy.
According to her, although the Ninh Thuan Nuclear Power Plant project was suspended 10 years ago, Vietnam and Russia still maintain cooperation through the establishment of a scientific center using nuclear technology. This creates a foundation for the project to be restarted when an official decision is made.
Associate Professor Koldunova hopes that Vietnam and Russia will build a joint mega project, not only helping to promote bilateral cooperation in the coming years or decades, but also contributing to strengthening the good relationship between the two countries./.
