In an article published by the media, the Chinese President expressed his desire to discuss with all parties within the SCO framework the future of the organization, as well as measures to promote cooperation to achieve new and greater progress for this important multilateral mechanism, the Chinese news agency Xinhua reported.

The SCO has only nine members: Kazakhstan, India, China, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Iran, but covers a vast territory with about half the world's population. Belarus is expected to join the organization this year.

After the meeting in Astana, China will assume the rotating presidency of the SCO for the 2024-2025 term.

Earlier, on July 1, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning said that Beijing believes that the 2024 SCO Summit will "help build further consensus, contribute to promoting security, stability and development of member countries", and promote "long-term peace and common prosperity in the world".

According to Ms. Mao Ning, during his visit to Astana, President Xi Jinping will have "in-depth" talks with Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on bilateral relations, cooperation in important areas as well as discuss the regional and international situation.

The Chinese leader will then travel to Tajikistan and, together with host President Emomali Rahmon, "draw up a new plan for the development of bilateral relations."

Beijing has stepped up diplomatic efforts in Central Asia, a key link in China's Belt and Road international infrastructure development project.

At the Central Asia Summit last May, China pledged to expand transport links with the region and promote the Central Asia-China gas pipeline.
