FPT Digital Retail Joint Stock Company (FPT Retail) will cooperate with MobiFone to provide virtual mobile network services.
The virtual mobile network license is a premise for FPT Retail (FRT), the parent company of the FPT Shop chain and Long Chau pharmacy, to enter the telecommunications market in the near future.
Unlike traditional network operators, virtual network operators do not own infrastructure, but provide telecommunications services by purchasing traffic wholesale from infrastructure units and retailing it to users. According to regulations, the management agency only grants limited licenses to network operators with infrastructure, but not to virtual mobile networks. Currently, there are 3 virtual network operators operating in the Vietnamese market, of which, iTel (prefix 087) and Reddi (prefix 055) cooperate with Vinaphone, while Local (prefix 089) cooperates with MobiFone.
A representative of FPT Retail said that the company will cooperate with MobiFone. Previously, FPT Corporation and MobiFone had a strategic cooperation agreement to enhance business efficiency, take advantage of the technological strengths of both sides, and contribute to promoting national digital transformation.
According to FPT Retail representative, the time for a mobile network to prepare technical infrastructure takes an average of 12-15 months. However, FRT hopes to shorten the preparation time and soon provide services to customers with the advantage of technology and support from FPT Corporation.
The company is also confident that it has more advantages than previous virtual network operators, such as owning a nationwide retail network with more than 800 FPT Shop stores and nearly 1,300 Long Chau stores. Each year, FRT sells over 1.5 million smartphones/IoT devices of all kinds and is an agent providing mobile telecommunications services to hundreds of thousands of customers. At the same time, FRT is a member of FPT Group with relationships with many large technology companies around the world. Therefore, FRT aims to become a new, youthful mobile network aimed at young consumers.
In addition to the three virtual network operators currently operating, the domestic market also has a unit that was granted a virtual network operator license in April last year, Digilife Vietnam Digital Services Company Limited (under VnPay). This enterprise's license is valid for 10 years.
